Do you use your freezer

Ive been helping the wife to tidy the chest freezer and we've now sorted the bottom stuff to the top of the freezer as this is the next lot tobe used,
I noticed all the verious items home made, ie pies, soups, stews, crumbles etc but very little shop bought
when i said to the wife its mostly home made she replied thats we're a lot of people go wrong ref freezers "they use the freezer as a stop off point from supermarket's freezer to the one they have waiting to be filled at home and dont bother to make home made meals etc.

Whats your thoughts on this one? DO YOU MAKE YOUR OWN OR JUST BUY READY FROZEN FOOD?

I have a side-by-side fridge. We rarely freeze home made stuff; only food from the stores. Especially ice cream.

I use my freezer mainly for homemade meals, leftovers, meats that I’m not ready to cook yet, ice cream, and sometimes bread/rolls. I cook a package of bacon or sausage, put in ziploc bag, and take out whatever I want to eat for breakfast. I rarely buy frozen meals.

I also like my beverages very cold, so I usually pour a glass of whatever and put in freezer for awhile. (Ice cubes water drinks down, which I don’t care for.)

After years of cooking for 4 I have found it impossible to cook for 2... so I cook double what hubby and I can eat... I freeze the left overs, and they are revisited in a month or so.. Taste just as good the second time.

I just thought the OP was talking about the top or side freezer till I read further, that cleared up my confusion as to what was going through my head thinking what an odd question. My first answer was of course I use my freezer, if nothing else for the ice cubes. Duh me. LOL! Anyhoo, that's the only freezer I have, I haven't a need or space for a separate freezer container.

There was a huge freezer in my basement but after my wife died last year I gave the contents away and sold it. My kitchen refrigerator has a nice freezer underneath but I hardly use it because I'm not a cook. I'm not even sure if there is anything in there except ice cubes. My new Italian chef is world renowned...Chef Boyardee.

I just checked the freezer compartment of our fridge. We have lots of frozen fruit - both purchased frozen and purchased fresh - which we use for smoothies. Also frozen veggies for casseroles, soups, etc. Paul Newman frozen pizza. A big package of very large tortillas. There's also some stuff in there I don't know what it is. Mystery food. Also several frosted mugs waiting to be filled with a smoothie or a beer!

He to everyone,
The reason i asked the question is two fold really, (a) as the years take over a lot of people find they've not the desire to go far and also if your in a place that can suffer the hard winters its a nice feeling to know you've plenty of heat for the home and food in the kitchen,

(b) the cost of living, this subject is one that a lot of people do have a concern about, we never know from one week to the next the cost of anything and so with these facts in mind the home (large freezer) can be both a life saver and a good way to a better life ref what your eating,

If you just buy frozen from the stores freezer 's and use your own as a transit base "fine" your paying shop prices "but" if you freeze" your left overs and make your own ready meals then you can really save, & eat food you know whats in it and not a load of junk but more important make the large freezer pay instead of just being a form of transit base from shop to home,

Home made food is a lot more filling and as ive said you know whats going into it, take bread, yes it takes a little time but boy is it filling and the taste is a real bread taste, plus as you get better at the basic "making" you can start to really get into making verious breads, fruits / herbs etc the modern bread making machines are simple to use if your not into using the cooker,
the same thing ref making your own food, retired people now have time to cook/bake and time to really sit down and read how to bake or how to make this recipe or even google how to do the same, good made food is a god send and all can be frozen and cost you a lot less and give you a healthy body,
If you've time have a look whats added to shop bought foods of your choice!! you'll really be amazed what your eating and why your tired half the time.:playful:

We buy meat from Sam's and divide it into meals and chest freeze..00thumbupNEW (Custom).jpg

I have a separate freezer and I use it both for home prepared foods and also meats etc that I've
bought at the store. When I see a good sale on chicken breasts or something, I stock up.

A separate freezer was very popular some years ago but I know of no one who has one today...

We used to have a chest freezer but it died years ago. We have a fridge/freezer and usually has frozen curries and chilis that hubby has cooked, frozen peas are the only vegetable we have that isn't fresh, the only ready meal is some Quorn pies (veggie) that I like occasionally, one drawer is filled with bags of Quorn mince and pieces for the chilis and curries. I also freeze bread from my bread machine and hubby slices it before I freeze it. When Ugandan daughter visits we'll have ice cream and chicken goujons for her. When we have guests we might have bacon and chicken in the freezer.

That's what I do. I love Costco meat, but it comes in huge packages. I buy all my meat there, and when I get home, I portion it out into reasonable packages and freeze it.. Then nearly every morning, hubby gets his instructions as to what to bring out of the freezer to thaw for that evening.
