What social stigma does society need to get over?

End of racism, the worst stigma, IMO
Just a word to divide us.
The majority of the world is not racist, but a small group of radicals make the headlines so they make us think its a big problem.
Most races get along just fine, its the media that puts a false wedge to bet 'some people' to actually believe it.

Think of you and your neighbors, many are Black, Asian, etc....so? They are also good friends.
Go to any hospital and you see blacks taking care of white people, white people taking care of black people.

Too many people believe the media/government hype. We see it on TV and we think its 'factual'.

Will we ever get racism etaticated 100%? No, just like we will never have 100% summy weather. Just a form of manipulation.

Just a word to divide us.
"Racism is no problem." Said by those on top of the racial (social & economic) ladder.

I've witnessed poor whites hating black people in their community. Why? Because by keeping black people down they are not at the bottom or so they think.

I've witnessed black people who have enjoyed affirmative action and its results, use their station of power to lord over whites and rationalize it with 'getting even'.

I've seen dark skinned blacks hidden in the 'back room' of the homes whose family is lighter skinned.

Too often I've seen it claimed that racism is the creation of white people, when in fact I've seen all people of all races practice it.

No racism is not just a word. It is a fact. And, an act practiced too often by everyone in everyday life. As if it is so common that it is accepted as 'normal'. Because it is 'normal' people are shocked by the label.

Although I agree with you on many points.
My thoughts on 'being just a word' is that it is such an overused word, that it has lost its true meaning.
When someone disagrees across races, many times 'racist' is thrown out there to deflect the conversation from the main points.

Everyone can find instances of racism at the macro level, But I'm talking at the general population level.
Races get along every day in middle America, by the millions.
Just because someone can call out specific instances 'they' have seen doesn't mean its a widespread issue.

But, it is a widespread issue. However, though widespread it breaks down into many small instances. Combined they make society what it is.

I had a sociology teacher tell me once: "All societies divide themselves by various means. Defining groups by race and then stimitizing them is one way of defining a hierarchy in society." It is maintained in many small ways. Death by a million pin pricks.

Society today needs a "complete makeover"!
When I was ten I didn't think society needed a complete makeover. I would bet it was the same for you. Ask a ten year old today if it is needed. I will bet the answer will be the same. The ONLY thing that has changed as you've gotten older is that you've gotten older and with that your perspective has changed. Beyond that, nothing really has changed.

No, I don't agree that it is a widespread issues just because you can name 10, 20, 50,000, 100,000 instances. In a country of 331 million the numbers are very small.

You're sociology teacher was correct in describing how a Socialist society is built and maintained. And yes, we are heading in that direction, not because of the very small percentage of racism.
This is a measurement that by itself may look like a big number, but in the larger scale of shear numbers, its not.

Anything goes. Cause it doesn't, and I want it my way. Cause maybe someone else's way is better. Those two are just for beginners. Society today needs a "complete makeover"!
oh, we will get a makeover. but, it won't be for the good.
The US capitalist society will morph into a Socialist society. Which is only a stepping stone to Marxism and Communism.

Much like putting a frog in water and raising the temperature, vs putting a frog in boiling water, Socialism is putting us in water and slowly raising the temperature.

The uniqueness of moving us to a communist society is that the government is making it so once we realize we do not want the society they are putting in place, it will be too late. Voting will cease (or manipulated so much) at some point and the constituents will not have a say in how the government works.

Luckily (hopefully) I will be long gone and our children will deal with what they allowed to be taken from them.

You need to get your history right. Feudal society was defined basically into two groups the landed and the peasantry. That is social strata. That is not Socialism. I suspect you have a very uninformed perspective on a great deal. Time to go back to school.

Well, thats your view.
No need to go back to school, I spent many years in Washington, in and out of many agencies.
There is a reason Obama and Hillary studied under Saul Alinsky. It permeated throughout their administration. The real insight came after hours at the local pubs.

You can cite all the high school sociology teachers you want. what happens in the beltway is a different story.

Man, why do so many of you go right to attacking someone with a different viewpoint? Do you think that makes you 'more right'? It actually doesn't do anything to prove your point.

Morals are in the eye of the beholder. Your comment is so general.....
But shouldn't we, as a society, share some sort of moral code? (I hate that word, "code", but I can't think of another to use) Is it OK to have sex with my neighbor's wife, as long as both of us approve? Can I knowingly shortchange folks in financial transactions?

I would think that to abandon all sense of morality, or just substitute what is convenient for me, could lead to a total breakdown of ours or any society.

Yes, yes and yes!!! We need a moral code to live by whether you agree with the going against it or not. The ten commandments still stand and will stand forever. Man's law still stands and there are those who will always see what they can get away with inspite of it. There are those of us who will always go by the code of conduct and despise those that don't.
