One issue with living alone,

I have one of those back lotion appliers. It works but if someone is having trouble with their shoulders, that may not work either.

The wall idea may be the best solution for some. Agreed lots of people don't get what it's like to be on one's own.

I'm still laughing at the suggestion to ask a neighbor to rub lotion on your back. Haha. Are they crazy?
I do not underestimate the seriousness of the problem, however.

Where did you get it.

edited to add: I just checked Amazon. These have one or two pads. It could get really expensive replacing them. Does yours have this issue.

We have similar for in the bath. How long do they last when applying lotions with it? I’m going to check these out. Thanks.
No idea. I've had one for years, but am not using it for lotions.

If you're interested, you might pick some out and look at the comments.

I see Walmart is also offering some of these. Maybe that's a way to check them out in person.

and having a rash on your left shoulder blade, where you cannot see it, or treat it with any of the dang creams!!!!!! IT SUCKS !!!!!!
I've been having the same problem. I've been suffering from a pain in my back, near the shoulder blade just about 5 cm from the spine. Panadol was unhelpful and I could not get relief by adopting different posture or sleeping positions.

Fortunately, my nurse daughter came to my rescue with a trip to the pharmacy, bringing home some Ibuprofen, a topical spray and a patch to apply to the area. The latter items generate heat.

They worked well by she has gone home now and tomorrow I will have no-one to help me apply the spray or the patch. I will swallow my pride and ask one of the neighbours to tend to me. They know that I am on my own and will be willing to help.

Jules, I had one from Bed Bath and Beyond and then got one at Walmart that I like better.

I looked at Walmart's site but I don't see the one I got. It's been a few years and it's held up. Still using. It was cheaper than the other one I had.

I had this issue at one time. I used the back of my back-scratcher to spread the cream on me.. Otherwise, I'd go outside and just find a stick!

I'm in favor of @Murr's idea... just blob it on the door jamb and rub yourself against it.

Wrap a piece of cotton wool ball around an old toothbrush.
You can get to any spot in your back..... stretch under arms, over shoulder etc
Works great for me and I do have problems with my hands.
Do you mean those cotton puffs? Then you put lotion on it.

either you've got very long arms or I have very short one, because I just tried that..not with a toothbrush but with something the same length, and I couldn't reach more than the top or the bottom of my back

Yes cotton puffs and I use only for parts of my back which I cannot reach normally.
I am not suggesting to use for whole back area!

I had an operation in middle near shoulder blades which left a scar and of course it itches like the the devil . I can't quite
reach it going over the shoulder or twisting my arm back so I soak the cotton ball and can get to it no problem even now when I can only use my left hand to hold the brush.

Unless one has a very serious arm problem most of the back can be reached but there is always that spot where you cannot quite get the cream or whatever on and with the toothbrush you can hit the nail on the head so to speak.
Works for me.

Hmmm...thought the issue was hard to reach spots......not for whole back.
Hands are best thing for that.

This is an eye opening thread, many great ideas in case I have a back problem. I know that it is not funny but I had to laugh at the idea of me trying to do some of the manoeuvres presented. It is not something that I had ever thought about not having this problem.

I've just had n idea, after seeing the scandalous price online for a so called cream applicator roller...well over £20....

..I just thought the small sponge paint roller that attach to long handles for painting behind radiators, would be a great idea to use.. you can either buy foam replacements or sheepskin...much cheaper than the application roller on amazon

about £4 each.. and you can buy a set of sponge refills for just a few $$

Amazon.com : mini foam paint roller long handle

I rubber banded a folded up square of a clean rag onto a back scratcher, liberally applied the itch relief cream onto it and was able to reach the place on my back that needed relief.
But I like the idea of applying the cream somehow to a wall or to an outside corner of a wall and then rubbing my back onto it.
And it's a morale booster to learn that even though I live alone, I'm not alone with this particular quandary.
