Would you be able to perform an emergency tracheotomy?

I had this thought, "How to know which is the Trachea and which is the Esophagus"?
Looked up a cross section picture, cutting the throat will reveal the Trachea. The Esophagus is behind the Trachea
Thought I would spread this information.
o_O😳😱😮😵😯😧 Only if I'd want to face involuntary manslaughter charges! Where *do* you come up with your intriguing questions?! :giggle:

Truth be told I asked my retired parademic wife your question. Without prompt or search she said: "Tracheotomy is a surgical airway management procedure which consists of making an incision on the anterior aspect of the neck and opening a direct airway through an incision in the trachea.

"You mean slit the throat?" I asked. "Put like that," she replied. "Yes."

Have you been watching RFDS?

I suppose under the right conditions I might attempt it, but it would have to be under the most dire of circumstances as I don't have much beyond emergency wound treatment first aid training, and that's decades ago.

I have watched EMT’s do it, but I wouldn’t want to try it. I don’t know how deep the initial cut needs to be. These guys make it look so easy to do for them, but I would be afraid of cutting into the windpipe and not being able to stop the bleeding. It shouldn’t happen, but I seen it happen once when the EMT cut into a vessel and the blood came flowing.
