If you are one ........Which is the better, in your opinion ?

Never used a Nook. Kindles are ok but kind of a pain in the ass. They are forever adding apps from every site you go to and taking up most of the storage space available. You can't uninstall anything you don't want or need to free up space without going through this big ordeal of plugging it into the computer to do it. I don't know about that. Plus they're awful small to read.

What about a tablet ... for buying / reading books ?
you mean like a larger tablet? kindle is a tablet but it's like a large smart phone. i see more folks using tablets for buying and reading. look at the hardware when your shopping to make sure it has what you think you're gonna need.

I began using a Kindle Paperwhite about 10 years ago when arthritis in my hands demanded. I download books from my local library and always have several good books on hand. I’m happy with it but cannot compare as I’ve used no other brand.Amazon is annoying with their ads but overall, I’m happy.

I've only ever used Kindle. I had one first in about 2010.
Now I have a Kindle Voyage. I like it and would recommend it except it is no longer available from Amazon.
The Kindle Oasis is over priced in my opinion.

I have Amazon Prime, so Prime Books are free to check out one at a time.

I also have an Amazon Fire HD 8 and it has a Kindle app loaded on it.
So a tablet is a viable option. Maybe look at what reader apps are available for a tablet you might be interested in.
Thing about a tablet too is that it is capable of MUCH more than a dedicated reader.
But also the thing is that a tablet needs to be recharged MUCH more often.

some of the tablets run for free with free apps depending on what you get. some of them run free but the apps might cost a small fee to use.

Is there a monthly fee required for that ?
If you buy from kobo and want books from them.

I bought mine from chapters, my husband bought his from Best Buy. We get our books from other sources: it reads from many different formats.

I am on my 3rd Kindle, and I love it. Our sons originally bought DW a Nook, but when it died, we both got Kindles. DW loves the fact she can make the fonts larger. Also, Amazon books are less expensive than B & N.
Also, someone turned me on for Calibre, which converts books between formats.

Right now I am reading up on a Lenovo Tab, they say it loads all books ? I also like the fact that it can be written on. They say it has a long battery life .

Years ago , I subscribed to Nat/geo , Smithsonian , and Archaeology .... they stacked up to the point that I became tired of looking at them.

It appears everything like that is available for [download] ? This is my main interest .

I used to have a Kobo reader but it died from the all too common power switch failure. I now have a generic ChiCom tablet and with a free ap, read my Kobo books with no problem and no charge (well except to the reader....I still have to charge that).

I have used a NOOK e-reader for around 10 Years. I find the Barnes and Noble website to be friendly and easy to use. They constantly
provide discounted book offers as well as updated bestseller listings. Fonts, print size and backlighting can be adjusted to your taste.

I have only used the Kindle Fire that came out in 2011. I use it almost daily and love it. I don't ever get ads or apps on it........didn't know you could if you wanted them. I only have books and music on mine.

I have a Kindle and have for years. I didn't know if I'd like it or not, so I first bought a used one. I was immediately hooked! I have the Oasis. One of the things I like is where ever I am, as long as I have my phone, I can open the Kindle app and pick up reading where I left off.

One thing about e-readers that some people may not know is you can borrow e-books from your library for free.

I have had a Kindle for over ten years and I love it. I only have 5-6 books on it but people are amazed when I am reading it in a waiting room somewhere, that one of those books is the complete OT and NT Bible.

I like to use the changeable font and the lighting aspect. When we get power outages here in the NY boonies, I can still read.

I have had several kindles, as well as using an iPad, and here is my input. The kindle is lighter weight than an iPad Mini, especially if you get one that is just an e-reader and not a Kindle Fire, which is an actual tablet.
However, I found it difficult to add books and delete them after I had read them (I have Kindle Unlimited because I read A LOT) , so I ended up finding books and returning them with my ipad Instead of the Kindle.

I finally gave my last Kindle away and now just use the ipad Mini, which is just a little larger than the Kindle 7ā€, and smaller and more lightweight than the 8ā€ Kindle Fire.
For me, it is perfect !
I have several iPads, plus the iphone, and I can read on any one of them. Since I also get books with knitting and crochet patterns, as well as books with recipes, I use a larger iPad when I need to see diagrams clearly, which was next to impossible with any of the Kindles.
Also, with the lightweight Kindle e-readers, they are only black/white, so meant for just reading books that do not have any kind of pictures, and any pictures are very poor quality. The Kindle Fire does have color pictures if you are reading a book that is illustrated, but still smaller than I can see them on my iPad Mini.
