My favorite city! I was married there and my daughter was born in the old Grant Hospital and my son was born in Ravenswood. My grandparents are buried in Rosehill cemetery. My aunt and uncle still live there on the Northside. That's where I lived mostly also. I see you are on the southside.

Later we moved to all a few of the north suburbs like Mt Prospect, then Cary, Crystal Lake and. McHenry.

After all these years my favorite teams are still the Bears and Cubs. Although I also like the Pittsburgh Steelers since that's where I grew up.
 

I love the city too. I was born in Streeterville on Oak street at Henrotin Hospital. When I was 2 my family moved to Garfield Ridge on the SW side. I graduated from Thomas Kelly HS on 43rd and California. I now live in a near SW suburb just 2 miles south of Midway. My husband grew up on the North side at Belmont and Cicero. He graduated from Schurz. Interestingly, my real name is Lynn aaaaaaannnnnnnndddd...... my last name begins with D! I have used LynnD as a user name on several forums.
 
I'm not that familiar with the south or southwest side. The places I lived where always in between Western and California and Devon and I forget the name of the other street.

Later we did move to Merrillville Indiana and Midway was our closest airport.

Lynn is my middle name and the D I added because I was looking at a carton of low fat Dreyers ice cream.

When I met my husband he was living in the Logan Square area, such a pretty Main Street, at least back then...this was 1970.

My Aunt and Uncle still live on N. Talman ave. my favorite street was Devon ave. so much to look at and places to eat and is was walking distance. Back then it was all Jewish mostly but since I've been back once to twice it was mostly Indian and something else which again I can't remember.
 

I'm not as familiar with the North Side.. but the good thing about Chicago is that all major streets run North and South, and East and West.. straight through the city.. The only diagonals are SouthWest Highway on the South side and Milwaukee and Elston on the North. However Chicago is a city of neighborhoods.. each having it's own name and many times it's own ethnicity.

So true, it wasn't hard getting around...especially if you know the major streets....most continued from north to south and east to west.

I was always in the W.Rogers Park area.

Im going to have to make a trip back there....I'm visiting my son in Illinois July-Aug., and he lives about a 4-5 hr drive from Chicago, since I'll be there about a month maybe he'll take me.

Wow... you WERE Nort side... I'm sout side and grew up on that little rudder sticking out of the city on the west.

Can you still speak Chicago? lol!!


  • The "Living Room" is called the "front room" (pronounced fronchroom)
  • You don't pronounce the "s" at the end of Illinois. You become irate at people who do
  • You measure distance in minutes (especially "from the city"). And you swear everything is pretty much 15 minutes away
  • You have no problem spelling or pronouncing "Des Plaines"
  • Your school classes were canceled because of cold
  • Your school classes were canceled because of heat
  • You've ever had to switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day
  • Stores don't have sacks, they have bags
  • You end your sentences with an unnecessary preposition. Example:"Where's my coat at?" or "If you go to the mall I wanna go with."
  • Your idea of a great tenderloin is when the meat is twice as big as the bun, "everything" is on it and a slice of dill pickle is on the side
  • You carry jumper cables in your car
  • You drink "pop."
  • You understand that I-290, I-90, I-94, and I-294 are all different roads
  • You know the names of the interstates: Stevenson, Kennedy, Eisenhower,Dan Ryan, and the Edens
  • But you call the interstates "expressways"
  • You refer to anything South of I-80 as "Southern Illinois"
  • You refer to Lake Michigan as "The Lake"
  • You refer to Chicago as "The City"
  • "The Super Bowl" refers to one specific game in a series of 35 played in January of 1986
  • No matter where you are, when you hear the term "Downtown" you immediately assume they're talking about Downtown Chicago
  • You have two favorite football teams: The Bears, and anyone who beats the Packers!
  • You buy "The Trib"
  • You think 35 degrees is great weather to wash your car!
  • You know what goes on a Chicago Style Hot Dog
  • You know what Chicago Style Pizza REALLY is
  • You know why they call Chicago "The Windy City"
  • You understand what "lake-effect" means
  • You know the difference between Amtrak and Metra, and know which station they end up at. You have ridden the "L"
  • You can distinguish between the following area codes: 847,630,773,708, 312, & 815
  • You have at some time in your life, used your furniture to guard your parking spot in winter. (CHICAGO CLASSIC!!)
  • You respond to the question "Where are you from" with a side" example:"WEST SIDE", "SOUTH SIDE" or "NORTHSIDE."
  • You know what the phone number is to Empire Carpet!

OMG, it's been years and every single one made me smile....love it! I'm going to send this to my son who also loves Chicago.
 
I'll let you folks enjoy your nostalgic memories. I participated in countless antiquarian book fairs in the windy city and what sticks in my mind are countless traffic hassles, five lanes of cars bumper to bumper creeping along for mile after mile. Not fun.

Traffic in ANY big city is horrible now. That said, Most natives know that if you want to get anywhere near Downtown (the Loop) OR to any of the Lake Front venues, especially in the summer, you NEVER drive.. You take the Metra or the L. I love riding the L and have ridden it since childhood.. It's fun in and of itself. Also, parking in the Loop is really expensive. Last year we DID drive down to the Christmas Market by the Daly Center and paid $45 for 2 hours.. Plus we had to fight traffic home.. Stupid decision and I don't know why we decided that would be a good thing. Much better to hop on the Orange Line and not deal with it.

Agree...I've been to a few big cities and in my opinion nothing beats Chicago!

I worked in the "loop" for awile and to get there I took a bus to the "L" and that turned into a subway and then I was downtown..worked on La Salle st at Continental Bank.

This is true... but most people LIKE the name and the idea as it will put a spotlight on the police brutality that exists in Chicago as well as everywhere else. It IS Chiraq IMO..

However, if your contribution is to say how shitty and dangerous Chicago is... You would have to say the exact same thing about every other large city where poverty and inequality exist. There are certainly areas of Chicago I do not go into.. that I agree.. BUT is there ANY city that doesn't have those?
 
I don't think this is that new, Chicago had problems even in the 70's.
