Are you a reader?

I like to read but haven't read a book in years. Instead I like to research different topics online. Medical and science materials interest me along with learning new topics in cooking and also refreshing my mind of things previously learned either through my studies, the fields I went to college for, or things taught me long ago that I have sort of forgot .
I do that too, mainly because I have the hardest time staying awake when I read a book. I used to love them, but then I had kids, lost the habit and now I need the screen light to keep me from nodding off. But I did order a copy of Swiss Family Robinson today and it's my plan to introduce my little grandsons (one is 18 months and the other hasn't been born yet), when they are 7 and 8 years old, to the immense pleasure of that book. I read it several times when I was 8 and it made me want to live on a deserted tropical island and build magnificent tree houses to live in! I hope they'll find it as big an adventure as I did!

I owned a western website dedicated to writers. I read thousands of western short stories by many great authors. Many of them were posted on the site. I wrote quite a few of my own and have had two western novels published. It took fifteen years but I eventually got burned out on westerns and closed down the site. (Rope and Wire) I then branched out to other genres. Once I retired I started up another writing site. This one of my own work. I love reading and writing in several genres including mystery, crime, sci-fi, romance and even a western or two.

A friend of mine recently showed me a book of poetry, all written by Irish poets. I think I will start reading some poetry because it was very beautifully written.

I read "Catcher in the Rye" when the public school I was in asked us Not to read it.(maybe the 1950s)

Salinger became one of my favorite writers. His short stories are meticulous.

These days I only read non fiction, and my favorite books are the Casteneda series , Patton's biographys,
"The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" by T.E. Lawrence ( a.k.a Lawrence of Arabia ), Chesty Puller's son's book, Lewis ,who wrote "Fortunate Son", Anything on Watergate, and J. Edgar Hoover, and "The Bible". Also '"The Gallic Wars" by Julius Caesar. In our third year of Latin we had to speak in Latin ,in the class, and our only assignment was to translate this book from Latin into English.

I had to stop buying books, they take up so much room, and my kindle holds the OT/NT Bible as well as a few other books.
I use the library more than ever so that I don't buy more books. What I have are books that are well worth re-reading

I'm dyslexic, so that means I read unbelievably slow. What someone might be able to read in one night takes me a week or two. Reading is more of a chore. I got addicted to the history of Ancient Egypt. Reading so slow and getting half way through the book- OMG!! there's another thousand years of history left.
I shouldn't laugh but you made it sound funny... :D but who could blame you..there's not one of who would do anything for 'pleasure'' if it was a chore..

I'd rather read than do anything else. And I like both fiction and nonfiction; the only genres I don't like are romance and military fiction.
I never liked horror type books. Like Stephen King or there was one writer named Koontz that I tried to read, but the first one I read was just too awful. I wouldn't be surprised if some really gruesome movie hadn't been made of something he wrote. I don't like that sort of thing at all. And like you, no romance novels with overly muscle-y men and impossibly beautiful women with long flowing tresses on the covers!

I did like reading some historical novel types when I was very much younger. Also loved the dragon riders of Pern series and of course the Game of Thrones books....but more recently (last ten or twelve years) my interest was more NDE books and OBE books.

I have loved reading since I was five years old. At present, I have a book in the breakfast nook in the kitchen that I read while eating meals, and two more by my bed, as well as working on creative writing whenever I get a chance! I like both fiction and non fiction, especially historical fiction.
You have a lot on the go don't you?

Warning: When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple

by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

The author wrote this when she was 29. She is a well-known Scottish poet. I like the idea of hoarding pens. I have a good number of pens now but always want more. At the 99 Cent Store I tend to go down the stationary aisle looking for new pens, because they are cheap there.

I generally like fiction books - SciFi, mysteries, and such. I started reading the Wheel of Time series. It’s huge! I watched the TV show on Prime and found it rather dark, but at the encouragement of a friend I started the first book. there is a lot more detail and characted development in the books. The TV show is like over cooked liver compared to the filet of the books, IMO.
