The Two Forums I Frequent

I post here on SF as well as my Mental Health Forum for schizophrenics.

I like the fact that everyone here has treated me as an equal. Nobody has danced around me or treated me with kid gloves...and I totally respect that.

In fact, I am spending much more time on this forum than my other one. I'm finding my Mental Health Forum to be stagnant and depressing. I may even give it up altogether. I haven't had a relapse in many months and I feel like I need that support site less and less.

This forum has been the right tonic for me. So cheers to the beginning of another year at Senior Forums! :)

I came here near the end of Summer under a cloud of panic attacks. Controlled but leaving an oppressive feeling of an onset at any moment. That's been eliminated for the time being and may be banished for good, but I credit the SF community among the tools that proved effective for me as well.

We're with you @Beezer

@Beezer you are absolutely an equal. Even if you have struggled with mental health issues we all view you as someone who is humorous and who contributes greatly to this forum. If you started a poll, I think you may find that many of us have also struggled with mental health issues, and this forum is a great place to help us feel welcomed and appreciated.

I had no idea. Do you mind talking about your experience with that condition? If not here are some questions I have, but if so just ignore.

I've heard it usually comes on in the early twenties. Was that true for you?

I think for those of us who have never experienced schizophrenia, one hears many simplistic ideas about what it involves. But I wonder how you think of it and if from your other group you have noted certain patterns everyone shares?

While I haven’t - as far as I know -experienced schizophrenia I have had a year long bout of depression so I know more about that from the inside. We sure are complicated creatures, aren’t we? I wish you well remaining in remission and I’ve appreciated your unabashed silly sense of humor as I have a streak of that too.

Good for you! Positive regard is not only respectful, it is healthy for everyone.

I went to the Mayo Clinic forum and had many a helpful discussion.
I recently joined it too. I learned something interesting: a new, break-through medication I tried for a hereditary condition, a medication which is supposed to at least alleviate if not cure that condition in 95 percent of those who take it, a medication which cost me $2,000 and didn't work: turns out according to one of the Mayo forums, sounds like it didn't work for a lot more than 5 percent of those who took it. So it helped a tiny bit that I don't feel quite so alone and hopeless. So there's that.

@Beezer I didn't know you have schizophrenia. If you mentioned it before, I missed or forgot it.

I go to a support group on Reddit for adult abused children. I find it a good place to go. There has been some ageism on the site because many of the participants are younger than me though there are some who have stated their age and are similar or older.

So I go here and Reddit, including other subs. Love "thrift store cats"

I have to tell you Beezer, with my background in medicine, including mental health, and a son that is schizophrenic, it is a tremendous accomplishment for you to be on this forum. Congratulation! Most people do not understand mental disorders, but, knowing the things that you have experienced, this forum needs to know that you have learned to manage this disorder, with a lot of effort, just like any individual with a physical disability. Bless you, Beezer!

I’ve been a member of the mental health forum since 2019. It’s a great place for finding info. It’s a bit much for socializing. Really scary at times to be completely honest.

I have tried joining specific forums when I have had a health problem. May I say in my case only comparatively minor health problems - so far, but enough to worry me.

I find a curious thing though. At first it is a relief and comfort not to feel alone and to obtain an outlet for my fears as well as getting more information. After a time however, I find I become kind of overwhelmed by the way a lot of people wallow in it, there is a negativity that is apparent. I choose to leave at that point.

I prefer to get information from my doctors, do as they say, pray and get on with life by distraction and being busy.
This is just my experience so far of groups for health problems. I know they are useful, helpful to a lot of people, but they have that other side for me. Has anyone else found this?

I had kept my problems to myself for a long while. Came here and saw others open up, and the supportive atmosphere probably led me to overshare. But I'm doing better and improving what I can. This place has given me some space to work on others things.

I hope I haven't wallowed too much @Rose65 :)
Not at all. I am not talking about this group or you. I am saying other groups can be like that, it can all get intense there.

I find this group far better because we talk about lots of things, including specific health concerns.

I am so glad you find it good here and helpful.

So relatable!

Thanks all for the thoughtful posts. I figure everyone has an issue or two that they deal with. Nobody leads a perfect life.

Just funny, though. I'm sort of known as the 'Forum Dad' on my other site because I am one of the older ones with this affliction. Then, like a fish out of water, I come to this forum where I am kind of one of the youngins.

Anyhoo, forward march!

I prefer to talk about issues as part of talking about lots of things. We are not just our issues, we all have so much more to our personality. It's nice to safely chat about whatever.
