How was this not investigated earlier?

I watched a documentary last evening about the Bon Secours Nuns (French Order) translated means, Good Will. They ran an orphanage for unmarried mothers and babies., in Tuam - County Galway, Ireland. What happened there is unforgiveable. Unmarried mothers were shamed by everyone and were reported to the Parish Priest who visited their homes and told the parents how evil they were and were not permitted in the streets, when the birth was imminent, she was to be taken to the Tuam orphanage to have the baby.
She had to work in the laundries, and she could feed the child but only for a short time. The babies sometimes died, and others suffered severe malnutrition until they we adopted out. A mass grave was discovered in the 70's and an investigation was held. It was noted graves of some 800 infants were uncovered in a disused sewage tank. There was a big cover-up by the Church but on looking at some adoption papers the Order received enormous sums of money from adoptees in America. Of course, Order refused to be interviewed. Poor women had to bear the brunt whilst the men that made them pregnant walked away free.

yes we learned about this quite a while ago now..sadly not the only one.. and Nuns were known to be sadistic beeches. My mother was raised by nuns and taught by them and routinely beaten from the age of 2...

I know a lot of Irish people. Not a one of them have anything good to say about nuns!

And it is things like this that made me decide to walk away from organized religion many years ago. It is not the religion that bothers me, it is what the people do, people who consider themselves "good christians", even to this day.
I was listening to an interview with a noted ex-Christian named Frank Schaeffer a few days ago. Between him and his father, they got the anti-abortion, right to life movement going in the USA. Very influential in his youth. But he talks of how the big bucks for speaking engagements ($10,000 a talk for him in his 20's back in the 70's) completely took over any and all Godliness in him. Mentions a few of the well known televangelists and has nothing good to say about any of them!

It was interesting to listen to him as he completely recanted most of his beliefs in dogma, the church and what the church stood/stands for except he was also very quick to say that he still believes in God and Jesus, but not the way so many Christians today do.

It IS unforgivable.
I am a Christian and I believe in Christ as preaching love and healing all. Those nuns were criminals.

Man, I find televangelists hilarious. They are so obviously on a grift, and their faith is wafer thin, if there at all. It's all a show as they beg for money - and it works!
I find many tele-evangelists are cringingly atrocious. However, some are genuine and good and provide good teachings based properly on the Bible. It is up to us to be discerning.

That is very understandable and so regrettable. The church people can be so snug and awful.
I too no longer attend church but I read my bible and study on my own.

At one time, the church had too much power and authorization to do things they had no business doing. Church became the perfect place for pedophiles and those seeking to take advantage of others. Sex! Power! & Money!

I agree with much here. The movie "Spotlight" holds the true story of how the Boston , Mass. diocese , in the 1970s and even prior to that ,had paid off many families of abused children and moved the priests elsewhere. My Army husband and his siblings were put into a Catholic orphanage, when they were very young, and what they told me was horrifying.

I used to be a Catholic but am a Baptist now- and there is quite a difference!

In the movie, "Philomena", a True story, Judi Dench is an elderly Irish woman, who was placed in Ross Abbey Ireland to give birth, as a very young teenager, and the Abbey would place these children of unwed mothers , up for adoption.

For 50 years she tried to find him .Where he actually was , is chilling and true.

When my daughter was in Catholic school in NJ, I never gave a single thought over whether priests were sexually abusing children, and I never even heard of that, until I moved to NY and was told one of these bad priests had been caught and lived about 5 miles away from me.

The movie "Spotlight", I can say, as a former Catholic, revealed how the families of abused children often acted-they didn't really want to believe this could happen, and would hold Priests in such a high regard, that they had blinders on, when a priest would show a lot of personal attention to their child.

I do not believe ,if priests were allowed to marry, that it would change the fact that some will always be pedophiles, but I do believe that most priests would never traumatize a child this way ,to cause them psychological pain for their entire lifetime.

I was recently told a story, from my best friend, so I'm surprised I never heard this before, of a woman closely connected to my friend, that this unfortunate thing happened to, except the nunnery was in Scotland. My friend's parents were from Scotland.

This woman never saw her child, it was snatched from her immediately. She did not even know if boy or girl. She was never able to have children again, whether physically or life circumstance I don't know.

Frankly, it should be obvious. When all they ask for is money, and try to sell you nonsense, it really should suggest they're on a grift.
You would think it should be obvious to anybody. But you know, con men are often very successful in life because A. They're good at seeing what people think they want/need and B. naive people are very gullible. Or maybe those naive people are so desperate for some sort of affirmation or confirmation, they can be persuaded of anything.

Hmmph. "Fallen women" indeed. Basically imprisoned and abused, forced into forced labor, for the "crime" of having had sex and/or having a baby out of wedlock. No reciprocal punishment for the men. (Some of the women were not prostitutes at all, but "too pretty" or too flirty for the powers that be.)

Quite the disgusting, horrific history.
