In the past 2 or 3 weeks, there has been an abundance of lengthy, and heart wrenching TV commercials from charities supposedly supporting disabled children, disabled veterans, and abandoned pets, etc.

Doing some research, it seems that the executives of most of these charities are the biggest beneficiaries. I doubt that half of the money donated actually goes to the causes these commercials claim to support. Here is a long list of millionaires leading these charities.

The Absolute worst may be the ASPCA....a report a few months ago claims that only 2% of their donations actually go to helping animal shelters.

ASPCA gives 2% of budget to pet shelters while ‘hoarding’ millions: think tank

It would seem that if a "charity" is spending a fortune on TV ads, it is just another Scam. Far better to find a small local charity that helps locals....IMO.

Bono from the band U2 had a charity called ONE.

The New York Post revealed that in 2008, the most recent year for which tax records are available, ONE took $14,993,873 in donations from philanthropists, of which a thrifty $184,732 was distributed to charity. More than $8m was spent on executive and employee salaries.

Huh. It'd be interesting to know where the rest of it went.

Yep that is why I buy dog and cat food and take to my city animal shelter. One of my dogs was born there. I have taken pets there before for the lower cost shots and checks for heartworm and medications. They run an awesome program. Now that I have 3, one of them at 90lbs, I can't handle them all own my own so I do use the vet.

Should I get another or I should say when I get another the dog will come from there or one of the rescues they use.

Maybe I'm just naive, but I like to think the Shriners and St. Jude actually helps real kids, and at no charge to their parents for living expenses while the child is being genuinely cared for.

Or maybe I'm just naive.
No, you are not, Pepper. Those 2 and the Salvation Army are safe and very legit. Those in charge take little or no salary for their work, and their cause is one I support.

I agree, Don, when it comes to food banks and charities first think "Local"! You will be helping your "Neighbors". Try to be as generous as you can.

Don M., totally agree about TV charities. Most of the money raised goes to pay for the production and distribution of the ads, plus to pay for network advertising. These ads aren't PSAs (free Public Service Ads), they're paid ads. It irks me to see these heart breaking TV ads for sick kids, etc. and knowing how little cash is actually going towards them. I feel the poor souls on those ads are shills for the charity.

I have been to St. Jude. Our family has supported them since Danny Thomas first began requesting public donations. My dad thought it was a good way to donate to a reputable charity. After dad died, I kept up the donation to St. Jude in my dad’s name.

Back when I was a kid, our neighbor belonged to the Shriners. During Christmas time, he wore his hat with the fuzzy strings hanging on it. He owned the local little corner grocery store, so many of the people in our little town would stuff dollar bills into the big gallon jug he would carry around. He said the money was going to the children’s hospital.

Shriner’s, St Jude’s and the Salvation Army are all reputable charities. I love the Salvation Army as they helped many of our clients when I was working. The colonel and his wife both work and take one very low salary. They are religious and some people object to that but I don’t care.

TV commercials cost anywhere from $150K to as much as $800K for a 30 second slot, When you see one of these "charity" commercials that drones on for several minutes, it doesn't take a genius to figure out where a major share of the donations go.

I'm pretty sure that 501c charities have some qualifications they have to meet, the ASPCA has a 4 star rating (out of 4 stars) on Charity Navigator. I looked at that article in the Post and it is getting its information from CEW. But CEW is not an independent organization, this is what I've found about CEW:

Who is behind these attacks?

Masquerading as a legitimate organization, the Center for Environment and Welfare is a front group for corporations trying to thwart animal welfare and environmental and other public interest reforms. CEW is affiliated with the Center for Consumer Freedom, which also goes by the Center for Organizational Research and Education. But no matter what you call it, it’s not a consumer protection organization or a watchdog group, and it has no public welfare mission.
CEW slings mud for companies that profit from the mistreatment of animals—including those in the industrial agribusiness sector that defend lifelong confinement of animals, inhumane slaughter practices and the reckless use of antibiotics on factory farms.

We've donated at St. Jude's and Shriners for years. You do have to know where your money is going when
you donate or you can really get scammed. They have a Shriner's burn center that we were familiar with, when we were in
the medical business, that did marvelous recovery care with burn patients.

Its not just a blanket needed but also research and education to continue to provide state of the art/cutting edge methodologies.

From St. Jude's:
We're proud that 82 cents of every dollar received goes to support the treatment, research and future needs of St. Jude. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to 80% in the U.S., and we won't stop until no child dies from cancer.
From Shriner's:
At Shriners Children's, stewardship is one of our core values. Approximately 80 percent of all funds spent by Shriners Children's each year is dedicated to patient care, research and education. We work hard to make sure your gifts are used in the most efficient and effective manner.

I used to donate to many of those charities but wouldn't have had I known that. I don't donate to them anymore but figure I rescued my doggy 11 years ago and she is the charity I donate to. I can't afford anything else.

What I can't stand are all the people in my local FB groups who set up Go Fund Me. I'm sorry but my grandparents, parents, suffered the horrors of WW2 and worked themselves to the bone to buy a home, provide us with an education, etc. And they were not rich in Poland, not even middle class. I'm sure there are people who need help, but honestly....

It's sort of like paying for $500,000 in Term life insurance when its ending in a couple of years.
The only way to get rid of Auto pay is close up and move to another Bank ? different Co. in another state.

I support St. Judes and Shriners. Also the Salvation Army.
