My addict son, in recovery now for many years, has a lot to say on the subject of overdoses, because he’s dealt with that himself.
He will always question the use of drugs when it’s related to a supposedly intentional suicide, because so often it’s not actually intentional. These days of course many addicts die simply because their DOC was laced with fentanyl, which they injested unknowingly, but back in the day when my son was heavily using, (before fentanyl became common,) accidental drug overdoses were from other causes.
He overdosed himself, several times, and would have died had he not been found in time, even once by me, and he absolutely was NOT trying to commit suicide.
He would just lose track of how many times he’s taken a hit and so would double or triple up unintentionally and his system shut down.
Or he’d been unable to get his DOC so was using other stuff then when he finally did get his hands on his DOC his tolerance had lessened. Not realizing that, he used his prior amount and his system wasn’t capable of dealing with it because his tolerance had lowered.
Or he’d use a different drug for whatever reason and misestimated or maybe even had no clue how much to take.
We lost many of his friends back then to oversoses. In all but one case my son was certain they were accidental though the parents or spouses of these kids were thinking suicide. As someone who’s lived it, I tend to believe my boy.
