You can have a legacy. But it may be unknown .
1. Children , especially if the bloodline continues for generations.
2. Make a big donation of money to a charity or institution. Get it named after you in print
3. Your writing, published on the web or print. Something significant, not just blogs or comments.
a print paper may survive computers because of storage and access A time capsule.
4. Another creative output-- film, new product
5. Invent or discover something and use your name for it.
6. Your "legacy" may survive indefinitely but its creator is unknown. Do you need your name or image
to survive--that is much harder.
7. We never know if or when we do something that has repercussions and effects that were never
imagined. Sometimes the opposite of our intentions. You would never know! Many people, famous and
obscure are known for something small, they thought was insignificant and spent little time on.
. Artists, authors, athletes, inventors, business men.
8. Get a street, park, or something public with your name.

Besides my son and grandchildren (who don't seem likely to give me any great grandchildren) there's my legacy of love and music. I keep saying that I probably won't become famous for my music until after I die. :ROFLMAO: But right now, I have loyal fans who say that my songs are like a musical vacation, they are soul soothing and make them feel good. That's what matters most to me because that is the effect I have in mind when I'm composing. My tracks will likely be available on various streaming services and YouTube as long as those platforms exist and even continue to be played on radio stations from time to time. That's good enough for me.
 
I read this thread a few hours ago and gave it some thought.
I have 25 years of documentation on the internet at a different web site, where I wrote articles but mainly also gave good advice to veterans and their survivors as to how to get through the VA Claims process for service connected disabilities.

The site is not what it used to be, and the owner says if it closes, the information and forums will still be kept online, as well as the search feature, except no one will be able to post a question anymore.

Still there are many other volunteers at this site, who have created a legacy there as well as I did and ,like me, many of us began there using our real name and never any alias. That had it's drawback for many of us however, because it is often better to just use an internet 'handle'.

I also thought of this- when I graduated from AMU, one of my professors, a retired Naval Officer, asked if he could have my permission, to use some of my thesis work in his courses, to show his students a good example of what a thesis should be. I certainly said Yes!

But I also realized that it helps to tell our children some of the things we have done, in our lives, that they do not know of, or do not remember. We all sure have a Legacy to share with loved ones. I regret I did not ask more questions of my family members long ago. Sometimes I did ask and their answer was often 'we will tell you that when you get older', and sometimes I think they did not know the answer at all.

When I was talking to my daughter by phone a few weeks ago, the Rockets came on TV briefly and I told my daughter I had seen them in person, in the theatre that is just below the Fox news studio windows in NYC. She knew I had been to NYC many times, but she was really surprised! Even more shocked because this was a class trip in high school and we went to the Bronx Zoo,the Empire State Building, and even to the Statue of Liberty on the same trip. It was fun discussing all that!

I ran into a past Chief of our local fire department recently and he used the word 'legacy' because ,at their annual dinner, he mentioned so many people over the years who gave us a strong legacy of their volunteer service to the department, that continued through much of their entire family sometimes, and how many, like my daughter- a Jr, Fireman, went on to either serve in our Military, or continued their EMT and Fire Department training, to obtain good paying jobs, as adults.

He sure thanked me for my 8 years of community service, in the fire Department auxiliary., that I had to leave when I finished my degree at AMU, because they have no auxiliary now, as no one seems to want to volunteer in our small community, like they did years ago. I think that is a sign of the times everywhere these days.:confused:
 
Our son died unexpectedly on 27-Oct-19. He had heart disease that no one knew about. I posted about it back when it occurred. A hard thing...as no parent should bury a child...

In 2020, We established an Endowment in his name at his Alma Mater, East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas to provide scholarship assistance to needy students who are pursuing degree's in Education.

We contribute additional monies annually. The University has it invested in their Portfolio and the Scholarship is growing nicely - even after deductions for awarded scholarships.

We get a letter each year that tells us abit about the students that were helped. Thus far 4 students have received assistance.

And life goes on...

Through my life I have helped many people and have kept a few out of nursing homes for a few years, took care of my neighbor’s kids so as a single mom she could go to college, etc. I have helped others navigate bureaucracies and given money and food. I may never be remembered for long but made a difference to those people.

I am sorry for the loss of your son, but at the same time, your establishment of the Endowment under his name at his university is a wonderful testimony of your love for your son. Kudos to you in helping needy students pursing their degrees in Education! Also, congratulations on becoming grandparents!

You have my deepest condolences on the loss of your son. For it to be unexpected had to have made it a 1,000 times worse. May he R.I.P.

How wonderful that you have established and continue to contribute to the endowment that will benefit students at his alma mater. I greatly admire those of you who turn grief into something positive. Blessings to your entire family. I bet your granddaughter is so cute. :love:

Very interesting! Didn't know we had a musical genius 'in-residence' here🙂!

I'm always so impressed by musicians because I've tried a few times to learn an instrument and I've discovered that I have absolutely no rhythm and no talent😆. So anyone who can play anything, to me is very impressive! The talent and the time it takes.....wow!

I'll PM you Debrah. I don't know about musical genius though. :ROFLMAO: We have other musicians here as well. @Paco Dennis @palides2021 are two of them. If there are others I didn't mention, it's an oversight, not an intended slight.

How wonderful Widow. I agree that our children need to be aware of historical events, especially good ones that involve their family members and can bring a sense of pride.

I'd like to think that but I'm one of those folks who has gone through life more with curiosity about first one thing, then anther, tried numerous different hobbies, crafts, experiences only to move on to the next thing in fairly short order. The result is that I've never become an expert on any of these things because something new grabs my attention.

I'd like to think I have a bit of an artistic impulse so I've painted, tried wood carving, pottery, paper cache, sewing, glass and tile mosaics, knitting, crocheting, bonsai.......always finding the most interesting part being the beginning where I'm learning about the new 'thing'. Like I had an absolute blast setting up a pottery studio and going to pottery classes, only to realize if I take the time to learn how to do it really well, I'm going to have to figure out some way of selling my products and craft shows and that sort of venue is just not my thing at all.

I'm the inveterate 'jack of all (trades), master of none', but I sure had a good time experimenting with all those things. Funny thing about all that, while I was working, I promised myself that when I finally got to retire, I'd really pursue those impulses because I'd have the time finally. But when I finally retired, I found that I simply had no interest anymore. Maybe all of that is one of the. reasons I'm so impressed by talented musicians or film makers!

See...talents, even though you no longer pursue them. I'm fascinated by musicians and authors. BTW, I don't consider myself a musician but more a composer, arranger producer. To me musicians are capable of and do perform publicly. like my BFF who has never had a "9 - 5"; she's always been a very busy musician.

My husband and I got into an MLM selling aromatherapy products for awhile. Sales was his thing, since he had owned a couple of botique shops since he was a young man and loved what he did. I found out quickly it isn't my cup of tea, so I understand what you mean. I got tired of preparing the orders, the product parties and especially vending, which usually turned out to be a waste of time.

Thank you for your interest Sailormann. It's hard to choose a favorite, so I'll have to think about it more. Some folks are definitely 'salespeople' at heart. My husband was like that when he worked and part of that was because he has a remarkable talent for diplomacy. My son in law is also good at that sort of thing. I'm definitely not one of those.

Personally, I think if you can compose and arrange music, that makes you some sort of musician. After all, you're not arranging cans on the counter and you are using a musical instrument! I think you're far too modest.
 
I lived my life only hoping to not actually harm someone. At the end may it be as it becomes. I also love to get into some acoustic, modern / Blues music with one of my guitars, (25) & work out for a half hour or so and know I just did that. Yea!

The harder I work at the music with a guitar the more peace it brings me. I hope all find peace their own way. its mine that counts for me.
 
I see my legacy when I look at my family members - those born into the family and their loved ones.

My legacy is that I am loved, that I will be remembered the family and that they will quote my wise or funny sayings, and that they will strive to emulate my positive qualities, just as we all do now for my mother and my mother in law.

Isn't that enough?
