What is up with younger people not wanting to work?

Over and over again I have heard and read and watched the next generation indignant over working 9-5 or working at all. A whole lot of times these people sink into a gripping depression and in my mind, I am thinking "get a job". Thoughts?

The rents are too damn high. If the rent were doable, more young people would leave their parents' home earlier, and get a job to support their apartments and an independent way of life. I couldn't wait to have my own home, and when I was young it was not only possible, but easy. The rents are too damn high, it's enslaving our young people as well as their parents.

Getting the younger generation into work ain't easy if parents have metaphorically kicked ass and got them out of their lazy stupor. Once in work they will quickly learn that:

Having a good job may add many benefits to your life, as it may allow you to live comfortably and provide stability for yourself and your family. A job can be important, as finding fulfilment in work can be important to our overall well-being.

A job may be important for a sense of purpose since it can provide goals to work toward each day and an income to support you financially. It can help you build skills and experience that will last throughout your career, even if you change careers later in life.

Your job can connect you with others, which can help you learn more about the world by interacting with people, be it customers, clients or coworkers, you feel feel more connected to society. Work gives you a sense of fulfilment: It helps to feel you have achieved a goal within your career or personal life.

A job may make you financially secure at the moment and in the future by providing resources to pay for necessities. A job offers an opportunity to learn new skills such as customer service, organisation or public speaking. Then there is wellness: Some jobs offer an opportunity to move our bodies throughout the day, which may contribute to overall health.

I wonder how many of these have just been coddled too much by their parents. I've remember one helicopter mom at the soccer games that when ever the kids fell & didn't get up immediately would yell where are the parents because they didn't run to them on the field right then. None of them were hurt.

Prices are high for everything & in some parts of the country more than others, but I don't think that is the reason in all cases.

I wish I had the link to some videos of these kids complaining about having to work a full day & having to face life as it is. One girl said she it took her over almost an hour to get to/from work & that took away from her social time to be with friends.

It's not all of the kids, but it seems that a few are giving others who do go out there & actually work look bad.

I don't believe it's that they don't want to work it's more that they don't want to work themselves to death for too little pay. Everything is so expensive, the work available to young people just won't cover what they need to live. Rent is the biggest culprit, I believe absent corporate landlords are a big part of the problem if it didn't take so much just to cover the basics then things would be different

Why work a 9-5, job hold up in a office cubby, for insufficient pay for a boss who tells you what to do when you can be be your own boss being an online "influencer", or create viral videos, or work at home selling for Amazon, or building up followers on Instagram etc, for 6 figures?!! And takes much less time per day, make your own hours, and then go out and play in the fresh air with all your friends and get whatever exercise you want to do whenever and however long??

But these influencers work and earn money. In my country (Germany) the welfare system pays the rent, health insurance and most of all you get the "Bürgergeld" a kind of unconditional basic income in addition.
Quote from the mayor of the German city Tübingen: "I once fed the citizen's unconditional basic income calculator with my family. If my wife and I simply went into unemployment, we would end up with 3868 euros a month. That's not going to make you rich. But if I were the sole earner, I would have to bring home around 4500 gross wage to achieve the same."
Now you know why many people in Germany don't like to work. Germany is flooded with 'migrants' (asylum seekers) who get exactly the same money as the unemployed Germans. And the stupid people who still go to work pay for them. That's fact!

I hadn't thought of that, but it does ring true. After I got out of the military(my early 20s) I'd typically pay $10-15 week for a "studio" apartment. I was dirt poor, but somehow I scraped up enough for rent, gas, cigarettes and a six pack for the weekend.

@George1959 ...I wasn't insinuating that influencers aren't working. I'm saying they become their own boss, make their own hours, make more money than they need doing it, simply sit at their computers and have fun with it...So...they don't have any desire to do the type of labor that is needed by other owners of big companies that have had no trobuble in the past of finding workers.

No need for them to go and work in someones office, or restaurant, grocery store, or shopping mall. So there's now a labor shortage for long established companies...many of which pay minimum wage.

It seems they just don't get the path of working 9-5. The world is transitioning out of that model.
Also, college. A large loan is not desirable these days.
I think they feel trapped and if they can change to a better system I'm all for it but in the meantime please practice good customer service skills, get off your phone, and take some initiative.

Sounds good to me if I could have made my living being my own boss when I was a young person I would have jumped at it. Instead, I labored for little reward, got yelled at by bad bosses, and jumped when told to, or else, damn I wish I were starting out again.

No problem Lara. I didn't presume it. Obviously just a misunderstanding. Perhaps I should have be more clear in my comment.

The cost of living these days is tough on adults who have experience living and making ends meet. Younger people have it tough. Rent prices are high, the cost of food high, gas is high. Imagine trying to make ends meet AND raise kids. Between child care costs and rent, there’s not much left. Most kids are just staying with their parents even if it means living in the basement. I feel bad for younger folks.

What are the life-long working skills that these influencers are getting from posting? JMO, but they are creating a very small world for themselves that is rotating around themselves. If you are in your "own little world", what do you do about what is outside of it? If it all came to a sudden end for them, what would they do & how would they handle it? Just my thoughts.

The job market & the jobs are changing & we don't know how everything will actually end up as. IMO, food & products will still need to be done hands on. If automated, someone has to watch those machines. Not everything can be done by remotely.

@horseless carriage was on point in post #4.

All reasons you've mentioned are valid. But I often met people who were not at all satisfied or even happy with their profession. Some examples: One of my professors at the university hated his job and was often complaining about it. In my family there are people who have good jobs and don't like them too.

I worked with several people who had worked as teachers, & one as an engineer, before giving those up to go into law enforcement which they retired from. Sometimes you just have to change your direction.

So true. Our generation has made them that way, by making them feel they are ENTITLED.
