Would You Like an Electric Car?

Do you charge in a climate controlled garage? One of the things I read that's stranding Chicago EV owners is that the outside charging stations charge much slower in extreme cold which has left drivers waiting in lines. On one report, a newscaster interviewed a guy who normally didn't have to wait at his nearest charging station and that day there was a five hour line. He had enough charge to wait but others who didn't expect such long wait times ran out of charge waiting and had to be towed. An EV expert on the newscast said people that charged at home in a climate controlled garage obviously wouldn't have the slower charging issues experienced by people who use outside stations.
So, maybe now that charger installers see the gravity of this problem, they will/should start building chargers inside of climate -controlled buildings? These are not difficult to install, really. Many pre-fab options for sheds & hangars these days. I'm thinking like an airplane hangar with openings at both ends, like a typical drive-thru car wash.

This would be a great option for all extreme weather. Who wants to sit in 100Ëš weather as your car charges? Better to be in a drive-thru shed.

I have heard they are good to eat! Ha!

I would love an EV if O could afford to own two cars, one gas and the other electric. But I don’t hve that kind of spare cash in my sock drawer somI will stick to a high mileage gasoline vehicle.

I've been thinking about electric cars lately. But looking at the way they run out of charge in the cold, I'm starting to think that getting one might not be a good idea.

they simply cannot run 800 miles with out a huge problem. How many hours sitting in a line waiting to charge the dam thing.
Sure, you will say that you just pull in and plug in for less than an hour and you ready to go for a couple of hours. sure just show your phone at the scanner. ..... hahahha Shure you got an ice scraper and Ice melt to get the door open for the Plug..
I know Get real think of the 100,000's of electric cars dead all over hell in your county. haha Your talking Millions of Vehicles dead in every state all over the world. Not just your B.S.

It's very simple actually. If you go to work daily, say 20 miles, and then you pick up your child + take them to soccer practice
Then you go to the game, go out for Ice cream after then drop off 3 of her friends and arrive back home, say 8:00 ish, did
you have the charge or did you have to go to a rapid charger ? hahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha

The Lady in the Tesla that crossed in front of me at Waldo World was bundled like COLDER IS WORSER this afternoon. 44F.

Think about Mr. Musk building $40 billion worth of Fast Charger Stations all over the USA instead of buying Twitter would have
done wonders for the USA. Instead does someone want to control what cha say not what you charge.

I entertain the thought of Leasing a Hybrid for 39 months and then another.
The Planetarium has a charging spot in the parking lot for 2 cars. yea!
Seriously, charging my car in the garage, not in a wet dream.
So the premium raises at dinner time for certain. $$$'s

It's sure a Gloomy Gus Day here even with National Peanut Butter Day designations.

The range is really compromised in the cold. I think the initial predicted range was incorrect to start.

I drive past a bank of about 20 Tesla chargers once a week on my way to meet a friend for lunch. It’s rare to see more than 5 open chargers at any time. Sometimes there are two or three slots open. Often enough they are all filled and a few cars are waiting in line. What’s changed is that all the slots are filled more often than they used to be 6 months ago. Is it the colder weather? More Tesla owners who are able to charge overnight? Something else? I don’t know.

So, if you can’t charge at home overnight, that is still a big disadvantage, IMO. Getting home owners with a nice garage to charge their EVs is the easy part. Now they have to convince people who live in apartments that waiting at a charging station for up to 30 minutes is time well spent.

My garage isn't heated and as we'd only travel in summer, we don't need to use a public charger so I have no experience with those in winter.

In summer, our car gets 387 km to a charge but in winter it's down to 221 at -21. For us, that's still enough to do all the running around we need to do and would be enough for most daily commutes I'd think.

the source of this article was??????????????
That's quite possibly true actually. Maintenance and servicing costs are apparently less with an EV because they have fewer moving parts in their drive train. 100 compared to an ICE cars 2000, so there's less wear. You also rarely do anything to the brakes because EV's have a regenerative braking system that's using the 'motor' to slow it down to a stop and you don't do oil changes.....So there would be less servicing involved in EV's.

You're brave to have an EV in Canada. Glad it's working for you.
Norway has way more EV's. I think 89% of their new registrations are EV's and in Sweden it's about 58% with Iceland having 56%. So more like forward thinking and caring about the environment. Yesterday I Googled it for another discussion and apparently 20% of global emissions is because of personal transportation, i.e. our cars and trucks that we do errands and commute in.

I posted a link above re Norway. 90% of EV owners there charge in home garages. They also have short commutes.

Link to info is in post #107 above.
