Used by the Royal Navy and designed to maintain accurate timekeeping even in the challenging and harsh conditions of a sea voyage, by counteracting the motion of the ship. It made its inaugural voyage and underwent testing on the HMS Centurion in 1736.

I actually co-owned one of these for a short time in the mid 1990s. The lady with whom I lthen lived was crazy about car boot sales (yard sales) and bought one of the clocks quite cheaply. It was all complete but not working. However she also happened to have a friend who was a clock repairer and he got it sorted for us. The sound of the ball bearings sliding along on the hour was surprisingly quite relaxing
