Dog dangers for callers at people's houses

When I need the engineer to come fix the boiler or plumbing, I noticed these days they always ask if we have any dogs, along with what is the parking situation etc.
I bet now this will become crucial. Why should any workman put himself in danger in a confined space? He must expect to be safe. So must Amazon delivery men and the postman.

Can you imagine if someone said yes we have 3 large staffies, or two XL bullies, or three German shepherds! After all, a stranger entering into their territory, their pack, could be fair game.

My friend had a car wreck while her dog was with her in her Volkswagon. When the medics arrived the car was on her broken leg and her Great Dane wasn't letting anyone near her. It took her a while to calm her dog and it was very cold out.

When I have workmen coming I always put my Dachshund in the front study behind a baby gate. Even if she likes the guy she's going to want to be up in his business seeing what he's doing.

I let the workmen know in advance that we have cats, in case they do not like them or have allergies. I automatically put them in a room and close the door. Either my husband or myself will stay in there with them, as they feel insecure by the intrusion.
I did the same when we had our mini dachshunds. Back then my husband was working and I was often alone with the dogs. If I had to move around the house while the workmen were present, I would put them on a short leash while they were present. They were very friendly, but I did not want them to be in their way. Plus let's face it my little Penny was a thief and would disappear with the tools!
I do understand that companies or individuals would question us about the presence of animals in the house.

Della, I just posted an answer and noticed yours! Dachshunds are so curious!

Here is the answer to all of your problems. Get rid of the dog, and replace it with something no one ever worries about.

wrong , I'm allergic to cats dander.. and my husband is so allergic he almost died when we bought an apartment which had housed ( we discovered later) 7 cats , and we were ripping out the carpets , and unbeknown to us at the time , he was allergic.. so allergic, he went into anaphylactic shock.. Fortunately the doctors surgery was right opposite the flat.. and the doctor who administered 7 antihistamine injections.. said that if we'd not sought help as quickly as we did .. he'd probably have had 20 minutes or less to survive...:(

Hoping it was just hitting the laugh icon instead of the hug one right beside it. I've done that a few times and was horrified when I realized it. Sorry to hear this happened, Holly... it must have been terrifying for both of you!
thank you Kate... it really was, and particularly as neither one of us knew he was allergic...

It’s common courtesy to segregate your pets from workers coming to your home. People probably ask now due to some folks leaving their dog out. It’s normal for a dog to guard it’s family and property but it’s your responsibility to make sure they are safe and protected.

@Rose65 - you seem a bit obsessed about dogs lately. Do you have dogs?

ROTF LMAO..... ThankYou..... I now have tears in my eyes......
WARNING..... dont read if your easily offended..... EMS give you a twisted sense of humor.

1st off I'm not a cat person....

I'm working with a new girl on the Ambulance, Had never met her, but had known her husband for years.
We get a call, walk up to the door and a lady lets us in, but warns to look out for the cat and dont let it out...
As we walk in... the cat trots out from another room, stops and looks at me, starts hissing and attacks at my foot.
The lady shoos the cat away and leads us to the single bedroom and sits down next to another lady who is obviously been crying a while.
It becomes obvious that these two are a couple, and uncomfortable talking with me about the depression/ medication aspect of the calls nature, so I leave my partner to conduct the interview as I step out and call the ladies regular Doctor and get her approved to come in today for evaluation, better than going to the ER.
The whole time, the cat is growling and hissing at me, And I'm waiting for the next attack.
So after about 30 minutes, We have the patient calmed down, happy to be going to see her Dr, and leave.... ALMOST....
As we walk towards the door.... The damn cat again attacks my foot and leg... The other Lady grabs the cat a split second before it became a football...
So we get in the Ambulance, and head back toward base, My partner is driving.... Shes laughing about how the cat didn't like me...
So I say... " Imagine that.... Lesbian's that have a pussy that hates men...."
She had to pull over and stop she was laughing so hard....

My brother's closest friends, a lesbian couple, have a cat who adores him. But then, he's gay..... 😁

What a sweetie!

I got a check in my mailbox for a neighbor, who lived down the road. I had to drive by his house, so I figured I'd drop it off. Knocked on the screen door, and this huge dog charged the door. "GRRRAAARRRRR", the damn dog just about rip the door off its hinges. If that dog would have gotten out, I don't think I'd be writing this. A guy came and took the check, all the time the dog is trying to get at me.

That is so frightening. It may seem humourous later but at the time it is no joke. I wouldn't ever want people frightened to come to my home.

My friend had a car wreck while her dog was with her .........

Over the years I have had many accidents involving different animals. I have transported more than few Service Animals in the ambulance. Have carried a few dogs from accidents, and kept them at our base while the people were in the ER. I have Even started an IV on a dog and then a deputy carried him to the Vet.. barely survived.

Another Ambulance story.... No warning needed....
2 o'clock in the morning get a chest pain call... As we pull up, standing on the front porch is an elderly lady straddling a 100LB + Rottweiler thats barking like mad and DRAGGING the lady across the porch. As I open my door, my partner starts screaming that shes not getting out, and calls on the radio for Law Enforcement.
The Lady Is hollering that the dog is very friendly.... So I walk up talking at the dog, She had said the name.... and as I start up the stairs, she lets go... The damn dog about knocks me down... jumping around and up on me... has no tail and wiggles in the middle... then runs across the yard, and charging back and starts all over again....... Takes a bit, but get her calmed down and go inside to see our Patient.
Well they tell me about the dog... It was there sons, but he had moved to Texas asking them to keep the dog until he got settled. Then said he couldn't get her and said to get rid of her.

I got off at 7 that morning, met my wife and Daughter at the house, and the dog went nutz again with seeing us.....
She came home with me and lived another 12 years...

Some years ago the postman had a parcel for our neighbors. They have three dogs, among them a Groenendael (black Belgian Shepherd). The postman asked me, if I could deliver the parcel. I answered "of course, no problem, the dogs are very friendly". I went in with the parcel and the Shepherd put his forepaws on my shoulders and licked me on my face. I doubt that the postman trusted in my statement :ROFLMAO:

Several meal clients to which I deliver have large, vicious-sounding dogs. If I knock or ring the doorbell, I hear loud barking, growling and snarling on the other side of the door. I have to wait until the clients get their dogs in a secure place. Sometime it takes a few minutes.

Once I was actually bitten on the forearm by a client's dog. When the client didn't come to the door, I opened it a crack to call out to him and the dog lunged and nipped me before I could close the door. Fortunately, it barely broke the skin, but it's something I had to report. After that, the client never appeared on the delivery route again. I still don't know why he didn't answer the door to call out to the dog to stop.
