The fake funeral and the missing body ...

Trish

VIP OAP
On Monday morning at 11 am, a London priest arrived to conduct a funeral at a Roman Catholic church in South Kensington (a very expensive area of London). The lavish funeral included a horse drawn hearse, two vintage cars, men in top hats, a full choir and lots of photos of the "deceased" 23 year old man. There was also a director filming the sad occasion.

But, what the priest was about to discover, soon brought an end to proceedings.

The coffin contained no body only ashes (the "brother" said the deceased was found frozen in ice). Of the two groups of "mourners" present, one group were paid actors and the other, more sinister group, wore balaclavas, puffer jackets, hoods and sunglasses. The Russian death certificate is said to be a fake and there is no evidence that the man who organised the funeral and chose the readings was, as claimed, the brother of the deceased. The balaclava clad "brother" refused to speak to the priest.

When it became clear to the clergy that the funeral was fake, they asked the mourners to leave, which they did politely and without fuss. Both the church and the funeral directors were paid in full so, no one was scammed.

As for the deceased. It was claimed that he was a 23 year old man who had gone missing after a New Year's Eve party near an iced-over dam in Latvia (although, it seems no body has been found and he does not have a brother of the same name as the person who organised his funeral). He appears to have no connection to South Kensington. It is also unclear as to whether the missing man's family had any knowledge of the funeral taking place in London.

A plot for a new Mystery series? Nope. * This is reported to have happened earlier this week! I wonder what the point of it was though. Insurance scam or some elaborate social media set-up perhaps? But, funerals are expensive and one as elaborate as this would be very expensive indeed. I must admit, this incident has me very curious as to what it was all about. Any ideas?

* I don't like clicking links on the internet so haven't included one but, Google will easily find it if anyone wants to read the actual articles in today's UK media. (y)

That is weird. As you say, funerals are expensive, so there must be some kind of payoff but I can't figure out what.

That is one very weird story. I keep thinking that it has something to do with the filming of events. All that money spent for what? Some kind of staged event, to be used somehow. Maybe a personal thing, and maybe a $$$ thing. I sure would like to know what becomes of this. I wonder if there is an AI assistant to keep track of this story. :)

It is the weirdest story I have heard in a long time and I do like these weird mysteries.

@fuzzybuddy Yes, it would be a good Orson Welles story - very spooky :)

@NewlySenior and @Paco Dennis All my theories don't really add up, it doesn't seem to make any logical sense. I don't know about the A1 thing but, I will be looking out for any follow-ups. I really want to know the answer to this puzzle :)

Update!
The organiser of a mysterious fake funeral with an empty coffin and extras as mourners is a convicted paedophile who caused outrage last year by staging a similar event involving children, MailOnline can reveal.

The extraordinary story emerged today of how a vicar halted a funeral at the famous London Oratory in Brompton Road this week on discovering that the whole thing was fake - prompting widespread speculation about who was behind the bizarre event.

Now MailOnline has learned that the chief 'mourner' who organised the fake funeral is sex offender Jacky Jhaj - who has a reputation for similar stunts.

Jhaj, 38, was behind a similarly bizarre event last November when a fake red carpet scene was shot in London's West End which saw 90 children and dozens more teenage extras hired to provide a crowd to be filmed.

Thank you for the update @NewlySenior

The November event attracting the children and teenagers is disturbing. I would have thought people like Jacky Jhaj were monitored.

Maybe it was deemed to be the only way to get an
authentic, service without it looking phoney!

Mike.

@Mike and @Murrmurr I wondered if the missing man had enemies in London and wanted a big funeral to convince them he was dead.

@NewlySenior has posted an update and it seems it's some seedy guy who has organised weird events in the past.

Time to analyze those ashes. I wonder if authorities thought to save some, if they got involved.

You know I had completely forgotten about the ashes. Although, it is probably likely that there were no ashes in the coffin at all.

"Paid mourners" aren't anything new, but to professionally film a fake funeral? Sounds like part of an underground movie to me.
@NewlySenior's update has confirmed who the guy who organised this was. Not a nice guy and he has organised fake events in the past.

What a strange situation! Some one mentioned the "War of The Worlds" radio show presentation. I remember my parents telling me about it and we lived not far from Princeton, where people were panicking.
The original Movie was scary- I had to walk home from the theater in the Dark!

The newer movie with Tom Cruise-I couldn't get through it until about a year ago- it was VERY scary!
But one of the scariest scenes I had ever saw was when "Annie" was being chased up some sort of bridge-at night!

Your OP mentioned ashes: "The coffin contained no body only ashes (the "brother" said the deceased was found frozen in ice)."
@Murrmurr I know but, didn't think about that when I was trying to work out what the scam could be - I'd make a lousy detective! 🤭

I have since read that the coffin was empty. The funeral directors were paid in excess of ÂŁ10,000 apparently :)

I love scary films and strange mysteries. I'd quite like to spend a night in a haunted house :)
