Let's be honest, one of the reasons rents are skyrocketing is because of greed.
Yes, those who have a mortgage on an investment property need to cover rising interest payments.
Never forget, they already own a home and have decided to use the housing market as a profit making strategy.
Another reason for higher prices is Real Estate agents advising landlords to raise their rental prices to make a larger profit year after year.
Not forgetting that the higher the rental, the more the real estate agent creams off the top.
Without controls in place, rentals will never go down, forcing an ever larger percentage of the population to become homeless.

Yes, I am. My land lord had me sign a new lease stating that the rent will rise every 6 months by no more that $50 a week
Which mean that in 5 years time the rent for this one bedroom apartment will be $790 a week. Disgraceful. With any luck, I will
die before then.

Perth. There is an extreme shortage of rentals across Australia.. What is available is outside my price range. Plus rental bidding is rife. A place advertised for $450 might eventually go for $550.

well you don't want to die before then, you're only young now...... better just search for a cheaper rental... :)
 
It is hard for me to relate because the land we live on, 18 acres, is paid off. One of the community members who died paid it off with his trust fund! It was more than we expected. But our "rent" was $500 a month plus some kind of interest. I don't know what we would do if we lost the farm.

You aren't getting any younger, and you have just had a terrible injury. You don't need this added burden of feeling you have to struggle with housing now.

it's the same here and in all cities in the world... it's cheaper further out of the cities... I know it must be horribly depressing for you.. because of course your wages don't go up to match the rents, but the only solution apart from living in your car is to move to an area with cheaper rents..

Well , you're feeling rightly down in the dumps and can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, but there's bound to be one, somewhere... it's just a matter of finding it. The law is not on the side of single men with no dependants I know that... and the same for women now... which is why there so many on the streets, but you're in a better position, in that you have what most of those don't and that's a job.

For now, what about changing jobs..is that an option?.. a live in Gardener..or handyman..something along those lines...possibly ?

The reality is there are thousands of people looking for a place to live.
Facebook ads here are for people asking for rentals, no rentals advertised.
 
No matter what we must keep going. It seems so many of us are facing a sort of gauntlet and you never know when a sucker punch is going to hit you. But it does, and you hurt, and you have to go on. Kind of like this...

I am okay for the next couple of years but eventually I will be priced out of the market.
Then I will have to look at sharing.

They share illegal housing and apartments as well, causing dangerous conditions for unsuspecting neighbors. These carved out apartments, chopped up to stuff tens of people in tiny spaces, some with no egress. They figure it's better than where they came from, I guess. Unscrupulous building owners are the culprits charging hundreds of dollars a month for a mattress on the floor, if you're lucky. Fire traps, especially since all the migrants seem to have ebikes which are carelessly charged. We've had many such fires from this, people have died. Poor people. No one in my co-op is charging ebikes.

Greed, it's all Greed.
 
It isn't just the mortgages that went up. So did property insurance and the cost of repairs, any utilities included as well. Then, so many landlords got the short end during covid when you couldn't remove non-paying tenants, but the landlord still had to pay the bills. Some corporate rentals are greedy, but the average smaller property renters are just trying to survive like the rest of us.

Greed really should be stated somewhere in the New Constitution, if they ever hold a convention and update it. We all know American Greed heavily influences the system - may as well say it out loud, in print, like alcoholics admitting they are addicted to something.

The U.S. gives lots of money away to other nations. What they want to do in Gaza to feed the people is admirable, it really is. But it's like our leaders can't walk and chew gum at the same time. They can't give overseas while also solving very real problems at home.

Writing a check to foreign governments it so easy - very easy. The logistics of housing everyone HERE is too complex, I guess. Even Harvard and Yale graduates employed in government roles apparently cannot figure it out. Right? IDK. Is anyone in the Federal government actually working on this goal?
