The officers were trying to serve a warrant when the shooting began. When I first saw the report, 3 members of a U.S. Marshall's task force were pronounced dead by the time the report aired. A Charlotte police officer who was in critical condition later died. He left behind a wife and 3 year old daughter. You can hear one woman comment in the video that the whole force was coming. And that they did. Several police cars, helicopters and SWAT were on the scene. Schools were on lockdown. Another terrible tragedy in this country's sad state of affairs that is gun violence. The shooter was taken out by officers' gunfire after a standoff that lasted hours. My heart goes out the the families, friends and colleagues of those officers who were gunned down.

I read they were trying to arrest a felon on gun possession. It seems obvious that the felon was planning to shoot up as many officers as he could. He succeeded. Very sad.

This is the kind of situation where maybe drones could help? Use the drones to draw him out or see what kind of weapons he has in advance as he tries to shoot those down. THEN, call in the SWAT tanks.

I am not for the militarization of police in general, but with how easy it is for bad people to get automatic weapons, I'm sure these officers and their bosses are wishing they had SWAT a lot of other equipment. It is equipment that should only need to be used rarely, but when you need it, it would be good to have.

then you will keep shooting and dying and stun the rest of the civilized world with horror and astonishment

Unlike Europe, the United States has never been the spawning ground of dictators so I can’t understand why we would want to follow the example of any European nation and in so doing limit our Militia’s ability to keep Uncle Sam from getting too big for his britches. In fact, one can ask how many people have died because they DID NOT have access to firearms to protect themselves. After all, look what happened in Russia; Gun Control laws were established in the Soviet Union in 1929 and from that year up until 1953 about 20 million political dissidents were rounded up and exterminated. And a few years after Gun Control was established in Turkey approximately 1.5 million defenseless Armenians were also rounded up and exterminated. The Nazis established Gun Control in Germany and we all know very well what happened there. China also established Gun Control and shortly thereafter about 20 million unarmed political dissidents were rounded up and exterminated by the Communists. And closer to home, Guatemala established gun control in 1964 and then over the next fifteen years approximately 100,000 Mayan Indians, who were defenseless and unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Uganda established gun control in 1970 and the slaughter of 300,000 defenseless Christians by Idi Amin followed shortly thereafter. Cambodia is another example of what happens when people are unable to defend themselves against their own tyrannical and homicidal governments. How many Cambodians lost their lives under Pol Pot, was it one million? After World War Two and the Holocaust came to an end every civilized nation cried out “NEVER AGAIN!” but those words would come to ring hollow in 1994 when the world just stood by, with its collective thumb up its own an*s, and refused to lift a finger to put a stop to the genocide taking place in Rwanda that claimed the lives of between 500,000 and one million defenseless Tutsis over a three month period. And if you think something like that can’t happen here in the U.S.A. then you’re dead wrong. In fact, the warning signs are already here. And do be advised that when any politician starts talking about Gun Control his/her real motive is people control. On the other hand, if you’re dumb enough to turn your firearms over to the government then you’re probably too dumb to have them.

The gun debate continues on. I doubt if the police could ever bring gun violence to an end, but if the courts would hand out longer sentences when a crime is committed with the use of a gun, it may act as a deterrent.

In Pennsylvania, if certain crimes are committed while using a firearm, the judge must impose a sentence of 5 years. These offenses could be a 1st degree misdemeanors or a 1st degree felony. Some offenses can go as low as a mandatory 3 year sentence. These are based upon the suspect being found guilty. Shooting at a police officer may get a suspect 20 years or longer, plus a $50,000 fine.

If the law would be that if any felony is committed while using a firearm, or any 1st degree misdemeanor is committed while using a firearm, the sentence shall be a minimum of 25 years to a maximum of 50 years, plus a minimum of a $25,000 fine to a maximum if $50,000 would be very good deterrents.

Once we take some of the latitude out of the judge’s hands and make some sentences mandatory, that could cause longer incarcerations and make felons think twice before committing a crime. Having mandatory sentences also puts everyone; regardless of color, religion, sex or length of education on an equal playing field.

I have sat in courtrooms and seen one felon that was charged with B&E and burglary and was one skin color and an hour later see another person charged with the same offenses, but a different skin color and both felons received totally different sentences. It made me want to scream or shake some sense into the judge.

Our laws have become "slanted" more and more to protecting the "rights" of the criminals. Many of them receive little more than a "slap on the wrist" before being released back into society. The Only treatment of criminals that proved effective, in recent years, was the encampments run by Sheriff Arapio in Arizona for several years. He had a very low rate of repeat offenders, but was removed from power by the "woke". If criminals knew that they faced more harsh punishment, and would live in a prison with only basic standards, they might think twice before committing their crimes.

When I was a young man my father once said to me, "We do not get personal or challenge those whose opinions we disagree with, we challenge their opinions." That having been said, just be thankful for those Yankee Cowboys, because if it wasn't for them you'd be speaking Japanese.

So sorry and so sad, these shootings barely make the televised news any more.

I hate rude behavior in a man. I won't tolerate it. --Captain Woodrow F. Call, Lonesome Dove

Way too much idealism surrounding the idea that there will be a deescalated version of this story in the near future. Guns and violence are the way we are dealing with criminals now. It is down right dangerous business. It can get, and often does, turn into the big leaugues in a second. When it does, it is war. I don't have any solutions to any of it. You can be that person who is at the wrong place , at the wrong time.
