The other day I asked a member what zone they were in and was VERY surprised by the answer. Somehow I’ve always thought all the States were further south than Canada but that’s not necessarily true. I am shocked by my initial ignorance. Some of you are much further north than I’ve ever lived. Clearly Im not that familiar with all the States but plan on learning more. Canada really dips down further than I assumed.

Geography can be tricky ! In my mind, I think of Texas going further south than Florida but my mind is wrong. Florida does go further south.

On a side note, I have difficulty remembering that the seasons in Australia (and the rest of the southern Hemisphere) are not the same as where I live.

Florida I knew was further south than Texas. I’ve been to Florida to visit for 2 weeks. My parents owned a condo there. I’ve also drove through Texas and many other states to get to California. My surprise is how far Oregon is as well as Washington, Montana, North Dakota , Minnesota etc. Those States are far more North than I realized.

The southernmost parts reflect where French and Brits succeeded in displacing the Indians earliest. Then consider defensibility of borders when the monarchy was overthrown and pushed back from the more habitable colonies to the south to obtain freedom and the right to self-determination.

And please recall the Indigenous Australians in my state alone observe and live by 8 seasons?

I did not state that correctly. I often forget that while summer is approaching where I live, winter is approaching to those countries in the Southern Hemisphere.

When asked about the southern most point in the US, most folks think of Texas or Florida. Actually, the most southern point is the South Point Hawaii which is the south tip of the big island.

I’d forgotten about Hawaii. You’re right. Thats really far south. I’ve never been to Hawaii but have been to California and have also been to bc and Vancouver island. It’s strange how you can sit in the Banff hot springs and look at all the snow up on the mountains. The mountains sure have an impact on growing zones.

I think the "southern most point" designation was stated/given to Key West before Hawaii was a state ..... and it just stuck. Now I believe most folks recognize it as the southern most point of the continental U.S.

I've been in love with Canada since I was a little girl. In the third grade I wrote to your government asking for information. They sent me such great things, maps, information, pictures, letters. I love Canada. My husband is from Canada, my sisters-in-law are Canadian, I have Canadian friends. Love Canada, have been to all the provinces, some many times. ❤️ Canada ❤️

Key West is part of Florida. I didn’t realize that until now.

I love Canada also but I also love some of the states like Florida, and California. We drove south and then west when visiting California for our 1992 summer vacation. My dad had to work down there but my mom flew back. I really missed my mom. We saw a lot of the States back then.

We once travelled north into & through Yukon to get into the southern part of Alaska (Haines & Skagway).
This my goal. I want to get to that area to pan for gold. I am not looking to become filthy rich, but just to experience what the prospectors did during the famous Gold Rush would be like reliving a piece of history. It would be so cool to find just one little nugget.

It's nice to know that you love Canada @PeppermintPatty :)
We've traveled to the New England States several times, and been to New York State quite often (when we lived in Niagara Falls, Ontario). Loved Maine & New Hampshire.
Maine is a lot like New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Hearing and seeing tugboats in the ocean as well as fog horns is part of its charm.

That would be exciting. My husband watches a series on tv where people are currently doing that. It looks like a lot of work but they actually find gold.
