My silly little project

Last week my son moved from the US to Germany to live, that's where his wife is from. So I made him a thing called a "touch place", it can be almost anything, a statue, a rock, or in this case a piece of wood. This piece of wood is from a walnut tree in my yard, the home my kids grew up in, my son is an arborist and he actually trimmed the tree and I used a piece that he cut to make his touch place. I also made one for my daughter though I don't see her moving out of the country.

The goal of a touch place is for luck, or remeberence, express gratitude, keep you grounded, or in this case to have a connection with your roots or home. It's a simple thing, you place in your home and when you walk past it you touch it.

Anyway...I know its kind of silly, but both the kids seemed to like the idea.20240609_185410.jpg

What a thoughtful idea.
I made my mom something similar after she had a stroke and was admitted into hospital. It was a roundish care bear carved out of wood. It was made with the same idea in mind.

I'm not sure why I called it "silly", I think sometimes I feel embarassed by my sentimentally, I get kind of mushy when it comes to certain things, like my kids. Even if it ends up packed away in a box to be rediscovered years from now I hope it will generate some happy emotions.

Definitely not silly. When we converted our old bus, a lady friend painted a picture of our first house and barn. I loved it so much, I made a frame from some of the wood from the barn. sentimental indeed.

That's very cool.

I refurbished my barn a couple years back and pulled out a couple of the horse stalls. My daughter took all the rough sawn boards from her horses stall, had them finished to 4S lumber and is now building a book shelf for her library room in her home. I guess she's sentimental as well.🥰

Heck, I cried at a singer in a theater last month and I felt like I was annoying my fellow audience members with my sniffles. I have SOBBED in the theatre, twice that I recall, no wait, three times, at the end of a movie or play - full on, "I cannot leave yet", sobbing.

Like I said Highly Sensitive People - that's a real thing. "You're not crazy, you're just an HSP" is what I say to myself.

Suggestion, because it will mean something one day, write the date on the back and sign your name. I have a few things of paper I have kept just because my parents' handwriting are on them. They both had lovely penmanship.

Personalizing it is a great idea! Wish I would have thought of that before my son moved, but I can still sign my daughters. When I travel to Germany I will try and remember to sign my sons.

Thank you for the suggestion, I love it.

I too, like the others who posted, I love the overall idea, @C50
and the wood, also.
And the responding posts.(y):)
