This from a governor who's state was ravaged by riots in Ferguson last year in which many believe poverty to be one of the biggest factors among it's own legal population.

Well, in one way I suppose he is correct. But he speaks of the times prior to the US being formed and not of today. Most of our Native Americans do now live in peace with the US. They serve in our military units. Many of the larger tribes now have large territories assigned to them. The Navajo is the biggest, I think. Then there are the Hopi folks that are surrounded by the Navajo. And a number more Native American reservation that do exist in the US.

Illegal immigrants...i.e. Mexicans...are not much of a problem in Missouri. The total Hispanic population in the state is less than 4%. There are probably a few bad apples, but the vast majority of the Hispanics here are here to work hard and try to make a better life for themselves and their families. In many cases, they have taken some of the nasty jobs that many of our residents seem to not want. In our immediate area, there is a big Tyson foods poultry processing plant that seems to be largely staffed with Mexican workers...cutting up bloody chickens and turkeys day after day. If the ICE raided that plant, they could probably cart off illegals by the bus loads.

Nixon's feeling is that the children of these workers should not be punished for their parents coming here illegally, and If those kids are doing well in school, and trying to better themselves, they should be given the opportunity to do so.
There is very little than can be considered "similar" between our Hispanics, and those who tried to destroy Ferguson. It's pretty rare to hear of someone with a Spanish name being charged with a crime, on the local news. However, that same news is constantly reporting issues with the Black population...in virtually every urban area.

I don't like the idea of our porous border, and the drugs, etc., that flow across it, but Missouri is not having anywhere near the problems with illegals, and Hispanic drug gangs, that places like California seem to have.

It's not just about Hispanics. The point is take care of your own first. Many legal residents were surprised because they have constituents/ legal residents who need those scholarships as much as the illegal dreamers.

Not sure I understand this thread at all. As I remember things, the children of illegals are considered to be US citizens. So who are we then excluding. Maybe the elders, that can step forward and make an effort to establish proper relationship to the US. So who is really being denied our college access by the mentioned legislation.

It's simple because of limited resources. Some could very well be denied scholarship money losing out to applicants who shouldn't even be in the pool.

The Children of these Illegals who are Born here are considered American Citizens...and, therefore, they are not impacted by such legislation. Rather, it is the children who were born in Mexico, or elsewhere, who slipped across the border with their parents, that this legislation tries to address. At any rate, the numbers of those children is fairly small in Missouri, and giving them a bit of a break isn't that much of a drain on the States resources. I think the funding of these educational benefits is limited to Community Colleges...which offer a pretty good education in the "skilled trades"...which we need.

Totally agree.

That is what I was thinking but did not post correctly. Born in the US means US citizenship.
