Only this month I have received various mail asking for donations. I tear them all up. I used to donate to Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul but that had to stop as the phone calls began as well.

My friend is extremely well placed in the charity community. I keep forgetting to ask her the OP question. Hope I remember & get back to you with how professional fund raisers started this idea. If I remember. I've forgotten for years. Especially since most of our conversations are in regard to "Young & Restless!"

many of ours are asking for £39...this is up from £19 just 2 or 3 years ago. It just makes me furious every time I hear an advert for it...

This country is in such a financial crisis that many people can't afford to run their heating.. much less find £39 to line the fat cat managers pockets of so called Charities..... ( $49 US)

Do a little research on the so called charities. Google how much the CEO of said charity makes. Some folks are making a fine living off your dime...

I don't care if it's one penny a day, I'll never go in for "sustainability" meaning, give us your bank account number and we'll suck some out for the rest of your life.
I quit giving to NPR because they were so pushy about that (and a few other reasons.)

I quit them all, exception being Matthew 25 Ministries . They seem to be the one that helps natural disaster victims the most {IMO} So when they send me a solicitation envelope , I put a check in it and mail it to them.

Those charity ads are produced by advertising agencies for a price, usually a good chunk of income generated. Those are ads, and TV, cable are paid to run them, just the same as those crummy 3 day deodorant ads. The agencies and TV stations receive the lion's share of the proceeds.

More and more of these "charities" are little more than a Scam where most of the money donated goes towards Advertising and Bloated Executive Salaries. Before donating, a person should visit the web site....Charitywatch.org....to see where that charities money is Really going.

Charity Navigator is a quality reference if you choose to donate to US charities.

And just like in business subscription based sales are on the rise.

The only charity that's after me is a bunch of sweet old nuns who run the nursing home my sister-in-law and her husband are/were in.

I send them a check every year. They're darlings, but they're a pack of bulldogs about donations. I can feel them breathing down my neck right now. That's OK.....they're doing God's work and I love 'em for it.

I remember being a St. Jude Partner in Hope was $19 a month. I kept upping my donation until I started taking my RMDs. Now that St. Jude gets those, the donations come to much more than my Partner In Hope donations. But oddly, I'm not longer considered a Partner In Hope . I never noticed any other charities specifically asking for $19/mo.
