I am posting this because I know that there are some on this forum who do use Alexa. According to this article there will still be the basic service offered for free . The sub based feature will offer an "AI enhanced" Alexa. So if you are happy with what Alexa offers for you now there seems to be no need to pay the subscription fee when it is offered. Personally, I think it takes a lot of gall for Amazon to charge for this new feature since I am guessing that most people who use Alexa are already Prime Members.

"Amazon is planning to release a newer, subscription-based version of Alexa with generative artificial intelligence support that will cost $5 a month, according to a report from Reuters. Alexa will still be free for the basic version you have now, but the newly upgraded version will offer conversational generative AI with a $ 5-a-month fee.

It is reported that Amazon is targeting an August launch date for this new version of Alexa but that is subject to change. This comes as Amazon has started to roll out an improved version of Alexa on Fire TVs to help make finding movies and TV shows easier."

It's the new "Alexa" to the rescue! :)

 

I have 2 dormant services like this, one from Amazon
and one from Google, I don't use either, but the one
on my Google Pixel, keeps popping up suggesting that
I should activate it, I also believe that there is something
similar on the TV, that can be used to control it rather
that use the remote, which to me seems silly.

I have, never, wanted to use this type of device, especially
after the dire stories that came around when they first came
out.
