The idea is that the gift is not expected. On birthdays, it is expected, so they get what they expect. But I don't see that as a gift. It's the ones that are not expected which touches anybodies heart, and that 'touch' is the real gift.Wow. I'm not sure how I would have managed my (former) spouse's and kids' birthdays, for example. Not that I ever expected a thank you note from one of them.
