Why are some people so touchy these days?

It seem no matter what you say, they take offense or take it personally. I make what seems to me an innocuous comment and someone blows up. e.g.

Me: People from big cities always seem to be in a hurry.
Them: What have you got against people from big cities?
or
Me: Folks in rural areas sometimes don't get good utility service.
Them: Do you find something wrong with people that live in the country?

It's exactly the same here... it's as if people are constantly looking to be offended... it's exhausting

Whaddaya mean touchy?! You take that back! 😁 Just kidding, of course... I don't know why, but I've noticed it, too... people take offense at the dumbest little things. I suspect it wouldn't happen if they'd be facing someone and not a keyboard warrior.

Americans are freaked out over the political situation, no matter which side they are on. I've never seen anything like it. If I thought Vietnam was bad........wasn't prepared for the last 10 years, no way. Everyone is picking up on the tension, whether politically inclined or not. We all know this is true.

I have noticed the "touchy-ness" myself, but what jumps out to me is ...... The very same folks that will -willingly tell us all how we should be encompassing , and inclusive in our thoughts and feelings. Yet ....... the minute ya speak out against their view , or their thought about anything ....... then suddenly they are the ones that become offended ???? Makes no sense too me.

Initially it was one country, but technology has enabled us to communicate around the world instantly. This forum is a prime example, we are interacting with people not just across a city, state, or country, but beyond to other continents. With that long reach comes a drastic array of cultures and influences. Along with that when people interact face to face the confrontational attitude is tends to be tamped down. When people interact across a digital path the gloves tend to come off much easier. The risk is lower, there is no immediate consequence either physical or intellectually that cannot be overcome by the delete key.

I wasn't actually referring to the forums or Fora... I was talking about real life..

Maybe it's the heat. I ran into a couple people in the lobby who were going for a walk and they asked if I wanted to join them. When we left the building there were 4 people sitting on the benches outside, and one of the people sitting made an angry comment to one of us (not me) for not having said 'hi'. I mean gee, touchy! I felt virtuously inoffensive because I'd said 'hi! hi! hi! hi!' as I went past.

City people think differently, if I'm in the city I avoid talking or eye contact, everyone just seems freaked out. shrug.gif

Someone once pointed out to me that offering a generalized opinion invites an argument. Once I realized I was doing it, I stopped doing that.

In terms of psychology, the top 2 reasons why people get all defensive and touchy; 1) ego/superiority, and 2) it's a tactic used to avoid feelings of responsibility for others and accountability for themselves/entitlement.

I think the reasons we see so much of this lately are chemical food additives, permissive parenting, lower expectations at schools, and sensationalized and/or divisive journalism, social media, and TV and movies.

US VS THEM.jpg

I always try asap to identify with the other. When I do, I usually laugh (at myself) with a loving heart. Most times the other person see their own folly and laughs with me. If not, I then explain my folly for having the same attitudes (which is true). If none of that fails to crack the tension of the other, I simply say "I am sorry you took my words offensively"; which is also true.

Hubby and I don't really talk to anyone, not in our condo building and not anywhere else. Usually, people come up to one of us ( for example in the grocery store) and start a conversation. And since we are kind of anti-social towards strangers, we end the conversation real quick. So we don't find anyone touchy these days, because we are probably the ones who are touchy.:D

Why? Why not?

IMO, I’d rather go through life (reasonably) happy.

I was the 1st. to ask this

Quote
"In both examples you were asked a question. What was your answer?"

The topic is

Why are some people so touchy these days?

For me. Answering those questions opens up the opportunity to get an opinion from the folks from big cities & rural. Not replying or ignoring my innocuous post seems almost like the Them.

Similar to here when a topic is posted opinions from all over are expressed. Missing the chance to ask Them seems to me to be a loss.

Could be a host of reasons. People not taking care of themselves can lead to Psych issues, money concerns, family concerns, stress of living in this world with it's seemingly unending depressive news daily, the fact that a lot of people are mad at the system but since are too afraid to stand up-take it out on others, and yes what some said above, mad at themselves for their decisions and have to blame someone-cause it can't be them right?

I think most people in the world have realized that all govts have let them down and realize democracy doesn't exist anymore. I mean the US is a disaster. Is biden real? Lol. I mean can anyone be that pathetic? Illegals entering the size of armies, fake bird flu being pushed etc. Canada is lost and run by clowns. Our great leader raised the cost of everything by 23 percent this year in a depression/inflationary bubble, but nothing is done. France is and has been a nightmare for years now. Germany is a disaster/nightmare-where a raped woman gets more jail time for calling out the rapists than the rapists do, just because they were illegals.

I hope with all these elections and changes in govts something actually changes. But in my time in the Military I have seen things that don't make sense yet are done with such regularity that it is the norm. Sad world we live in, and my professional opinion is people are at their 'wits' end.
