How do you prove who you really are?

You can get a document that says who you are, and get a driver's license with your photo on it that says who you are, and even get other documents that use those documents (Like getting a passport), but couldn't it all be faked or made up.
Your birth certificate doesn't have your picture on it, and even if it did, it would look like a baby.
What makes our ID foolproof?

My birth certificate has no picture on it but my certificate of identification does. It’s when I was 19 so doesn’t look anything like me now.
My drivers licence picture is only 3 years old so together with all those, I can prove who I am.

I've heard, and it could be wrong, that in the U.S. a lot of people have been fingerprinted at certain points in their lives... and not just if & when arrested. Is that so?
But the person they fingerprinted they identify as you by some other document.

But aren't those things acquired from another document.
I guess I am just wondering how any of it couldn't be made up.

It is not something everyone has to do.

However, if you have a job that requires a security clearance or a background check you get it done. I had to get it done for my job.

@bobcat I am wondering when we would be questioned to prove our identity and it be doubted even if we had the necessary documents?
Well, in many states, you need a birth certificate to get a driver's license, and sometimes to get married, but if you were in possession of that birth certificate, how do you prove it's actually you?

When I was going through my rebellious teen I actually went to the Public Library and used the microfiche machine to look up my birth announcement in the local paper. I had seen my birth certificate but I was surly enough to think that I was adopted . I mean how could I have such crazy parents ? :ROFLMAO: . Anyway, I found the announcement so that along with my birth certificate was enough to convince me that I wasn't adopted.

How do I know I didn't get switched up at birth ? I don't for sure but just like everyone else I have to trust that the hospital I was born at kept track of things to make sure it didn't happen.

I do know that when in high school I did have a certain ID that didn't have my true birthday on it. I had it hidden in my wallet. Funny thing is I don't know how legitimate it looked because I never carded when buying liquor when I was underage.

There are people that can steal an identity so they can use your name for financial gain. They may do things like open bank accounts, get a mortgage, etc. Once this happens, from what I understand, it’s difficult for you to prove you are you and this imposter isn’t. Massive amounts of identity info is on the Dark Web, available for a minimal price to purchase. Scary stuff.

this is what makes it easy for Identity theft. This is why they were saying that Covid was part of an experiment to discover how easy it would be to get the Masses injected if we thought it was for our own good.. and the idea that in the very near future, people will be happy to be Micro-chipped like a Pet..

First there will be a 'Mass attack on people's bank accounts by those using Fake ID's'' supposedly..... then the Microchip idea will be wavered in front of people to offer 'protection''.. against fraud..

My birth cert has sufficed for 75 years

That got me my permit and driver's license, but none of those had my photo

As time passed, my DL (with photo) and my birth cert. got me my passport
Last one was Y2K

But, that's a good question with all the fake IDs floating around

The birth certificate IS a document.
The identification certificate IS from a document as is my drivers license.

You question is how to you prove you’re you.
This is how I prove I’m me.
Sorry. I guess I didn't explain it well.
A driver's license, or marriage license, for example, may be given based on the information acquired from another document (A birth certificate, which IS a real document), but how does that birth certificate prove it's you.
If two different people had your birth certificate, how would you prove which one is the rightful owner.
Some babies get switched at birth, and the parents never find out the real truth.

Yes. Anyone can get this information online. People researching ancestry can look at, and post birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, etc.
You can go online and request a certified copy of your birth certificate, but how do they know it's really you. If the person requesting it can supply them with the correct information, how do they know you are the rightful owner.
If other documents are granted based on the supplied document, then it all hinges on whether the original one is 100% accurate and belongs to the person possessing it.

Yes. If you were a home birth, it raises even more validation issues.

That's been somewhat of a concern, as I was born in Cuba, and don't really have a 'birth certificate' document. I have a Report of live birth from the Anglo-American Hospital in Havana, Cuba, a baptismal certificate, a U.S. Army Honorable Discharge(DD-214), retirement documentation from San Bernardino County Sheriff's Dept., and a Social Security account number that I've had, since age 14.
A couple years ago I got a U.S. Passport, which is considered the "gold standard" of IDs. And, when I recently got my driver's license renewed I also got the Real ID, which makes the Federal gov't happy...

Well, I do know that when there are dead bodies that cant's be identified (like in a plane crash) the medical folks take process their DNA and try to math it with a relative who knows the person.

There is also recently a way for a DNA genealogist to identify a suspect doing crimes by matching their DNA to groups of people with close matching DNA to actually be able to pinpoint who that suspect might actually and be able to arrest and convict them.

Of course you'd have to be dead or wanted for a crime or crimes. So not necessarily that useful for nowadays but apt to be useful more as the science progresses to make it easier and easier to identify people.

During the Viet Nam War, I took USN and USAF tests to avoid being drafted for which there was otherwise no escape if remaining in the USA and likely would otherwise have become a grunt carrying an M16 in swamps,. That brought me into the USAF where one becomes fingerprinted, a sure way to have life long identification. I was put into a SECRET electronics field for which I also had a through FBI investigation. Since my father was also involved in national defense rocket corps and an uncle became a higher ranking naval officer, my identity is well cross validated. I still have military HD documents and also still have birth documents from Los Angeles County.

I would very much prefer USA establish national IDs and E-Verify for employment that many in Wall Street and various political types hate.
