Would you relocate for financial reasons?

I'm gonna die where I'm at, but a man who's been my son's friend since they were all about 10, and calls me Dad, was born in Calif, did some overseas teaching for several years, and bought a place in Idaho when he came back because it was a 5-bedroom house for under $100K.

He found Idaho to be too boring and too conservative, and sold the place for a profit after a few years.

We went from New England to Tenn. for work. A LOT cheaper to buy a house there but.....sometimes you get what you pay for! Cheaper house and taxes does not get you the same quality of life! We headed back to New England as soon as we could retire and are much happier here. We did do the due diligence and there is so much more for us here than the "cheaper living" of TN. Go where you will be happy - expenses in Maine are much better than we expected so it is worth the extra "expense".

We are looking at Maine, too since we have friends and in-laws there.

Well it wasn't exactly starting over for us as I had lived Idaho and in the SV area for many years, but US$ 36k/yr in property taxes w/out drawing 2 substantial incomes in the household made it very easy to leave the NYC metro area. Although I've been thoroughly disgusted w the extremists in the state legislature we're getting along just fine after 5 years. We have old friends, and many old friends in the surrounding states, new friends, new hobbies, lead an active outdoor lifestyle, it's a fairly robust cultural center(for Idaho), and we can do w/out fine dining and museums. Our daughter has moved west to a nearby city so we're all good.

Would you relocate for financial reasons?

No real need to financially, living the middle of the Middle Class life comfortably, and like where I'm at, aside from the fact that food delivery is impossible.

Now, who knows what changes the next "x" years will bring, if my wife precedes me in death I might try to relocate to be closer to my son. If I precede my wife...well I guess it's problem solved.

I have moved many times for either my career or my husband. Starting over is hard. I love where I have lived for 27 years and have many good friends as well as my oldest son and his wife. Although the COL is higher here I downsized my home and didn’t consider moving. Thankfully I can afford to stay.

I did that once. In 2005 after a severe hurricane season and at the top of the real estate bubble, we moved from South Florida to Dallas because the cost of living at the time was so much cheaper and the quality of life was so much better. We sold our home and my mother's and bought two nicer homes for less money. My company allowed me to work from home so I gave up a 50-mile commute for just walking upstairs. I still chalk that up as my one big "win" in life.

We recently visited the mountains of NC on vacation and have been actively considering moving there. The weather would be more temperate, the cost of living would be lower and traffic would be lighter. I've been researching properties. However, we just today discussed the reality of moving (packing, driving two cars with two cats, overnighting along the way) and honestly we don't think we could go through it again at this stage in life.

I hear you. Hubby's family is in Northern and South Florida. They are our only real family so he wants to be close. We actually looked at properties in Mexico and flights are over 7 hours from almost anywhere. We can be there in a little over 2 hours from Dallas. I've got 8 years on him, so he will probably outlive me. His logistical priorities outweigh mine at this point.

I am still working and the present apartment is new construction, 2 bedroom, in a very safe area. Pay 1,450. My partially disabled daughter lives with me and thus far the government refuses to help her with disability, so this is my life story for now. Would like to move to a small rural town. With my computer work I could live anywhere.

I have thought about it off and on in the past but stayed put because of my dad. Now that he has passed I might investigate it further in the future. Not so much for financial reasons (although cheaper is always nice) but just to find a less populated area. And a place that is a little cooler.

I've moved so many times, and hated it. I prefer to stay put. But I hate North Dakota so much I'd gladly move almost anywhere else—except back to DC. But I can't afford to, so I'm stuck.
Panhandles a corner in Florida January-February-March ? Lil hunger is not a significant thing.

Until retirement moving for financial & other reasons is what we did.. Just before retiring we traveled all over America looking for where we wanted to live in retirement. That worked out for us.

I too would love to move, not to a different town, just closer to town and to a house on a much smaller piece of property. But Huzz refuses so here we stay. There isn’t much to choose from anyway; a big fire 6 years ago burned down about 25,000 residences in a nearby town so what few houses come available get snapped up quick and at high prices.

Off- if- cer, surely having room to roam and play is a strategic advantage? ... :ROFLMAO:

I hear you! We are faced with a move soon and we also have two very nervous cats. The vet gave us some sedatives once, so that may be the way to go. We only have one car, and plan to pay packers and movers this time, instead of doing it all ourselves.
