I rather obsessively shop real estate. There are some pretty darn cheap places to live out there. Anyone game to uproot in retirement and start over?
We are looking at Maine, too since we have friends and in-laws there. We went from New England to Tenn. for work. A LOT cheaper to buy a house there but.....sometimes you get what you pay for! Cheaper house and taxes does not get you the same quality of life! We headed back to New England as soon as we could retire and are much happier here. We did do the due diligence and there is so much more for us here than the "cheaper living" of TN. Go where you will be happy - expenses in Maine are much better than we expected so it is worth the extra "expense".
Would you relocate for financial reasons?
I hear you. Hubby's family is in Northern and South Florida. They are our only real family so he wants to be close. We actually looked at properties in Mexico and flights are over 7 hours from almost anywhere. We can be there in a little over 2 hours from Dallas. I've got 8 years on him, so he will probably outlive me. His logistical priorities outweigh mine at this point. No real need to financially, living the middle of the Middle Class life comfortably, and like where I'm at, aside from the fact that food delivery is impossible.
Now, who knows what changes the next "x" years will bring, if my wife precedes me in death I might try to relocate to be closer to my son. If I precede my wife...well I guess it's problem solved.
Yup.....sometimes you get what you pay for! Cheaper house and taxes does not get you the same quality of life!
Panhandles a corner in Florida January-February-March ? Lil hunger is not a significant thing.I've moved so many times, and hated it. I prefer to stay put. But I hate North Dakota so much I'd gladly move almost anywhere else—except back to DC. But I can't afford to, so I'm stuck.
Off- if- cer, surely having room to roam and play is a strategic advantage? ...I too would love to move, not to a different town, just closer to town and to a house on a much smaller piece of property. But Huzz refuses so here we stay. There isn’t much to choose from anyway; a big fire 6 years ago burned down about 25,000 residences in a nearby town so what few houses come available get snapped up quick and at high prices.
I hear you! We are faced with a move soon and we also have two very nervous cats. The vet gave us some sedatives once, so that may be the way to go. We only have one car, and plan to pay packers and movers this time, instead of doing it all ourselves. However, we just today discussed the reality of moving (packing, driving two cars with two cats, overnighting along the way) and honestly we don't think we could go through it again at this stage in life.
