Sonya Massey Shooting in the news today

Reddit casual “reporters” say her family confirmed Mrs. Massey was suffering from schizophrenia. That is not an excuse for her or the officer or shot her. It’s just a simple ingredient to the story - like what the weather was like, or what time of day it was.

The whole “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus” - I cannot tell you how many churches I have visited where this is a completely normal thing to hear people say during prayer or praise time. For those who don’t know, it is a way to meet dark forces, or forces perceived to be dark, with a power greater than oneself. It is something said when people are feeling vulnerable.

So, you’ve got a woman frightened at 1:00 a.m. who is also suffering from a mental illness, AND she also uses phrases of a particular church culture. Phrases that might be unfamiliar to many other church cultures or to those who have never gone to church.

If you watch the whole video, you’ll hear the officer say at the end she was coming at him with a pan of hot water. Anyone who has ever boiled a pot of water can see that is NOT TRUE. She was walking it to the sink to dump it.

Oh, and you think it’s weird to cook in the middle of the NIGHT? Honey, I have sewn clothes, done my taxes, mopped whole rooms and cleaned a bathroom in the middle of the night! Cooking helps a lot of people deal with stress. Maybe that was just her thing to cook late at night to calm down?

Some people must never be police and should never own guns. Period.

I read this story..I'm no prosecutor, lawyer or legal mind in any way shape or form.. but this guy is as guilty as sin of killing a woman that was no threat to him... IMO... clear as day

regardless of whether any church uses the term Rebuke you .... anyone who has ever gone to school knows the word ''rebuke'' means to 'admonish or tell off'... and not as he is trying to say.. ''Attack''... and then what's even worse is he prevented his partner from helping her...

This is going to be another Floyd trial isn't it ?

“Oh My God, What have I just done.” THAT comes to mind for the OFFICER!

I don’t know if it will be another Floyd Trial. A lot of that depends on if they allow cameras in the court. I hope the police department will be examined for its training procedures. I have no idea if those matter, but it is a question that should be asked.

It’s just so sad every time this happens. So sad and useless. Two families ruined forever and over what? Over a pot of hot water.

yep ..not even really over a pot of water because the lady had just gone to take it off the stove .... all over a person who was verrry trigger happy.... and clearly very on edge...

There are tons of mental institutions now closed up basically but the huge yards are mowed weekly. Now thats mental illness.

Top floors of hospitals, mental wards, go ahead and jump, the catch phrase.

Very sad!

It’s impossible to know what was going
on in that young man’s heart and mind but it is clear that he should not be a police officer or allowed to carry a gun.
As of the news report I saw a couple of nights ago, he was fired and is now being charged with murder. This is another tragic example of police who are not trained on how to deal with mentally ill people. Even if he thought she was going to throw boiling water on him, which I doubt is the case, all he had to do was back away, not advance and shoot. Was it racial...I can't say but it was certainly unnecessary and hopefully he'll have a lifetime to think about and regret his actions while he rots in prison.

SIX departments in four years. Plus two DUIs.

"Since August of 2020, Sean Grayson worked less than one year at the Auburn (Ill.) Police Department, one year at the Logan County (Ill.) Sheriff’s Office, and then just over a year with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, the records obtained by WCIA show. He was also employed with police departments in Virden, Kincaid and Pawnee."

"Grayson was arrested twice for Class A misdemeanor DUIs, once in 2015 and once in 2016."

So shocking! He was mean to her from the moment she opened the door!
There she was, a soft spoken little slip of a thing in her white nightie, if he felt threatened by her how did he ever face criminals?
There was no reason at any point to think she was going to throw that water on him, but if she had, it never would have gone over the counter and reached him. By the time he shot her she was crouched on the floor and could not. have. possibly. hurt. him!
:mad::cry:

.. Why did I do it? Well, it just felt so GOOD.

He psyched himself up to do it.
Well it's not going to feel so good when the "Brothers" keep kicking his a*s, especially those who have deep love for their mothers and grandmothers. He'd better psych himself up as to how to escape the living hell he's going to find himself in.

@Naturally Your post begs the question...how did he get hired in the first place! I smell lawsuit !

@VintageBetter I meant to mention that Robin Roberts (GMA) was visibly upset after viewing that body cam footage.

Robin's a softy for sure, I've noticed it even more since she had cancer. I know this made me tear-up and I'm not that easy.

I wonder if we'll ever know if anyone had tried to break in earlier and why the car in her drive-way had broken windows.

I'm listening to a live program now and I'm going to watch the video later. Thank you for the additional information VintageBetter. People do all kinds of things at all hours. I knew a retired couple. Sometimes the husband couldn't sleep. His wife would make him breakfast at 2 and 3 am.

When I have cleaned in the wee hours of the morning, that's stress cleaning. I was anxious over stuff, could not sleep, got up and worked. Then I’d go back to bed for a few hours, wake up and oh look! The kitchen is clean!

Exactly... this is surely a case of murder... rather than manslaughter or self defence.... he just gunned her down for no reason.... .. and what's worse he was far enough away from her, if he really...really felt she was a threat to him, to just shoot her in the arm or leg... but he just wanted to kill her. That much is clear!

There were several problems with this police officer, not only was he cruel and violent, he was stupid. He couldn't communicate with her because he was angry and not a good listener... and stupid.

When she opens the door she says she called them because she felt helpless. He says, "Helpless? We went all around the house, .."
He thought she was accusing him of not helping because he was too stupid to know the meaning of the word helpless when describing a feeling.

She sits on the couch while he looms over her and asks her last name. She pauses for one split second, so he starts laughing at her, saying she doesn't her name. He was too stupid to know that young women sometimes have already had two or three names and might need a second to think of the most current one.

He starts in about the water on the stove like that was a fire just waiting to happen. Water rarely catches on fire but he's laughing at her again.

She quietly picks up the pot of water (probably going to make tea not, everyone has a kettle.) She carries it to the sink and
you can hear it splash into the sink as she pours the hot water out.

Then you hear her say "I rebuke you in the name of the Lord." Officer Pea-brain thinks "rebuke" means something like I'm going to hit you, but Jesus only used it to mean stop. He never accompanied those words with violence. In any case she didn't look at the cop when she said it, but slightly to her left.

I guessed then that she had schizophrenia because people who hear voices usually perceive the voice coming from the side like that. It actually is a faulty neurotransmitter taking thoughts to the hearing center. She wasn't talking to him, she was shushing her voices. I've seen it done many times.

All policemen should have some training about mental illness and should understand simple signs like that. This guy probably had such training but forgot it all.

I just want so badly to have been there to protect her.

I wondered what the "I rebuke you" statement meant; thanks for clearing that up.

As far as the cop goes, he had no reason to shoot Ms. Massey. All he had to do was back up. Based on what I saw, he murdered her.

She sure didn't look like a threat to anyone, IMO. But center mass is the best place to shoot a person who is an actual, reasonable threat to one's life.
