Average Weight For American Women (And A Few Other Countries) Surprising!

I have to fight to keep the weight UP. Been losing a lot, don't eat enough, I actually forget to eat except for breakfast.

From the article:
"An ideal weight then might be different for a person with a small frame size (wrist size less than 5.5 inches and height under 5 feet, 2 inches) versus one with a large frame size (wrist size over 6.5 inches and height over 5 feet, 5 inches).
MedlinePlus."

That kind of info has always confused me. I have wrists less than 5" (small frame) but I am 5"6" tall (large frame.)

It's interesting that Australia, Canada and UK are all averaging about 160 while America average is 170lb. As a nation, we quit smoking about ten years earlier than they did. I think the smoking thing is also the single biggest reason we weigh more than our parents generation. I gained weight when I quit smoking and I don't know anyone who didn't.

I think women hear that muscle weighs more than fat and then overestimate how much muscle weight they've gained.
"women in their first year of proper training can expect to build on average one pound of muscle per month, and men can expect two pounds. "
After that the gain slows down to pretty much nothing. I've heard most women who begin weight training gain only 3 pounds of muscle after 6 months. So if your friend says, "I've been going to the gym for three weeks and gained five pounds but it's probably muscle weight!" she's kidding herself. She's probably letting herself eat more as a reward for working out.

Nothing surprising. I used to be surprised by the number of women I know who are 6 to 10 inches shorter than I, but equal or exceed my weight. It seems to be the new norm. No, I’m not a beanpole.

According to the chart for American woman, I am in the average
range, my weight 155 to 160 at 5'4"...

I'll look at that chart again though lol. I am not thin, I am not heavy,
I am slightly fluffy. ;)

The soda pop is a big culprit with fast food.
Well there's diet soda of course.. a pub landlord friend of mine used to say... it lways made him smile because the only people drinking Diet drinks were the Obese...

Anyway fast food is definitely a problem.. especially now people can just sit on their sofas, and order through an app on their phone...also cancer is a problem amongst those who eat fast food often, because it;s been proven food that's been cooked in oil which has been used to cook food over and over again, is carcinogenic ..ie french fries. KFC.. etc

The other problem is the other fast food.. and that's processed cooked in a Microwave. All very safe if used occasionally.. but very often people are just buying a whole cart load of Processed microwave meals at the supermarket.. and that's what they live on... full of calories, fat... sugar, preservatives. additives... and shockingly they're feeding their children on these foods..

About 1995 I was in Canada, the Maritimes, to be precise. I used some short-haul flights. In one of the planes was a very fat young woman with the face of an angel on the seat behind me. Sometimes, during the take-off of the plane and during heavy turbulences, she hold on to my neck. I did survive :). Until today I regret that I had no possibility to ask her to a coffee. I couldn't since I was only participant in an excursion and we had a very close schedule.

Have you ever taken a sneaky peek into other people's grocery carts? Oh my gosh, it's frightening and now wonder people's health is so bad! Can't tell you how many I've seen where there isn't a vegetable or fresh fruit in sight! I even had a cashier at a supermarket ask me what my bunch of radishes were! A younger woman, she didn't even know what they are... I couldn't believe it. So you're right on the fast food and what people are buying in supermarkets.

Have you ever looked at the myriad of youtube shopping videos.. mainly from low budget stores like Aldi or Asda.. and at least a 1/3 rd are made up of chocolate, cake, sweets, crisps, ( french fries)...sugar laden stuff.. the rest of low quality things lie cheap sausages , pies etc... and in a haul of £100 there might be one green vegetable...

I never had a weight problem, but being slim, not thin isn’t necessarily a good thing. Seven years ago, I had a terrible case of pneumonia. I had no appetite and only drank water for the first 6 days in the hospital. I had lost 9 pounds in those 6 days. A Pulmonologist checked out my lungs and put me through some breathing exercises. He said for me to breath as fast as I could for 30 seconds. I got to 26 inhales and exhales before I passed out.

He then told me that if I didn’t start eating, I wouldn’t be able to reverse the damage I am causing to my lungs and will probably die within days. He put me on a high calorie, high protein diet. I had lost 14 pounds in 12 days. I started eating anything and everything. They were feeding me red meat, potatoes, spaghetti and meatballs, one-third pound hamburgers for lunch, and of course, assorted pies, cakes and cookies and lastly, milkshakes made with real ice cream.

Eating that diet, I was gaining over a pound a day. I wanted to know what gaining weight had to do with my recovery. He said because the pneumonia puts a lot of stress on the body and the only way to alleviate the stress is to feed the body. Not every doctor agrees with that theory, but it worked for me.

#1 rule - don’t drink your calories. Or at least keep the liquid calories to a small amount.

Good general rule.

If I drink soda it is almost always the sugar free variety - I don't find this stimulates me to eat more, as was claimed upthread.
I am also not,nor ever have been, obese.
