What are the most frightening horror films you ever watched?

I don't have a ranked list but the scariest I can think of are the Spanish •REC and even more so the 1st sequel •REC 2.

These are in Spanish and not dubbed in English so you must read subtitles, but that only adds to the shaky-cam (much better than in, for example, Blair Witch). Dubbed would probably lose a lot, taking away from the surrealism.

•REC did have an English language remake. That was decent but not up to the scariness of the original. There were also more sequels but quality really dropped off.

Well, I do not remember many of them from my child/teen years. Never was a true movie buff but. In my adult life, no movie ever scared me. There have been a few that discussed me, those involving chainsaws & such. Most of those came along after cable/satellite TV. It is hard to believe the amount of gore, and even harder to believe that it 'entertains' so many.

The Castle? Which I believe was a European film from the 60's which terrified me for years after, I can't take gore and horror so I avoid it.

At the end of "Signs," in the credits, there was a sign from my cat who had died the day before. It was shocking, especially since I had an urge to read the credits carefully, something I almost never ever do.

I had never heard of the movie "Eyes Without a Face" until Billy Idol's song came out. I was finally able to find and watch it a few years later and it creeped me out and still does. It's a very slow burn though and not frightening in a "jump scare" way.

Have a look at the scene of "Eyes Without a Face" (Les yeux sans visage, France 1960) in which a surgeon is cutting off the face of a woman to restore his daughter's destroyed face. Mark Gatiss tells of this movie in his documentary "Horror Europa" from 38:54.

We've had the same thought at the same moment. How interesting. But I was 3 minutes too late.

Psychological horror but I found it terrifying how many women are trapped in this position:

(And yes, it stars Michael Gough who played the kindly butler Alfred Pennyworth in the 90s Batman & Robin movie; he's horrible and terrifying in this.)

None for me, but my wife got shook up over watching ā€œCandy Man.ā€ Yeah, really.
