Are you trained in the Martial Arts?

Could you please share that with us, Murrmurr, if you don't mind?
It's a lot but I'll try to keep it brief.

I sit in a comfortable place with my tea tray in front of me and a single-burner propane stove next to me. I heat the teapot of water while I prepare the yerba tea in a wooden cup, When the water is about 160 F-degrees, I pour it over the tea, slide the steel straw (a bombilla) into it, and sip the first cup while entering a semi-meditative state. I repeat that process through 3 or 4 cups of tea.

Tai chi? Very interesting martial art! Very true! As strange as it may seem to some, there are indeed meditation aspects of the martial arts that can lead to a certain profound calmness. We always meditated both before and after each extremely physically intense practice session. Yes, it did eventually reduce the tendency towards physical aggression.
Yes. I was kind of an arsehole before I got involved with Tai Chi and meditation.

I'm really good at meditation. I've used it during wake-surgeries and oral surgeries. Didn't feel a thing. (y)

During a back procedure, one of the nurses kept breaking me out of my mental state because I'd brought my heart rate down so low, and I had to restart my meditation each time. That was a drag, but I got through it ok.

I wish I could meditate that good. I've practiced for years but my mind is just too busy, I envy you.

In the beginning, I used my daughter's laughter as my mantra. Try that. Just sit or lie somewhere comfortable and keep playing someone's laughter in your head. It's absolutely beautiful, especially if it's a child or grandchild of yours.

Later, you can use music or nature sounds or whatever sound soothes you. I used Maud's laughter for months, if not over a year. So there's no rush to try a different mantra. Take your time.

When I was having a cyst removed from the top of my hand, the anaesthetist kept asking if I was awake. I was annoyed because I was meditating.

After the procedure, I told the surgeon to tell the nurse what I was doing and to not wake me. But she did it again during a subsequent procedure and I had to tell the surgeon to not have her assist him again if there was a 3rd or 4th etc.

There was a 3rd procedure, and she wasn't there to assist. All went perfectly well.

As a teen, I learned very basic boxing skills. Then at age 48, I trained in Pai Lum White Dragon Kung Fu under the guidance of Sifu Pai Pono Li. What martial art of any were you trained in? What physical and psychological benefits if any did you derive from it? What are some memorable expeiences you had during training?
Around forty years ago I took some Tendo Wu Jitsu classes in the Sensi's home, and a Tai Chi class just for exercise and balance, not really self defense.

No, am a small peaceful person that avoids physical violence. Have never been trained in any fighting skills nor have interest to.
Me too, I couldn't ever fight or defend myself physically. I couldn't hurt anyone and violence horrifies me.
However, if I had my time again I would learn self defence. Too late now.

My wife did child daycare while I went to sleep. I worked 3rd shift. I slept really well with them playing.
Tinnitus gets is the way if I try to focus on anything else, so I found that focusing on the tinnitus strangely calms me.
Any form of meditation other than standing, I fall asleep.

Maybe you need to do something ritualistic while you meditate. I sometimes use a tea ritual, but it could be doing some sort of puzzle over and over again, something mind-numbing. I realize that splits your focus, so you have to work a bit to focus more on meditating until that takes over, but some people can do that. Maybe you're one of them.

I'll have to think on that for awhile. See what ideas might work. Thanks.

Tai Chi which I have loved for many years and recently boxing. The latter is not a martial art but others have mentioned it so I guess it counts.

My oldest son wrestled for 3 years in High School and then 4 years in college. (division 2). I practiced with him his first year of high school. But by his 2nd (junior year) he was kicking my ass pretty badly so I quit.

I was practicing Tai Chi when I was about 37. I practiced the morning ritual exercises for about 6 months. I was a housecleaner. It really helped with moving about the houses. It brought a certain mindfulness and graceful motions to my work. :)
I signed up for two different tai chi classes before they became popular. Neither class materialized for lack of interest. By the time it was available I was into something else. I always regretted that.

No. I prefer an easier form of self defense.

Personally, I don't think of martial arts as a means of self defense, and particularly not when you're defending your family or others. So, I carry, and I have very effective defenses staged in certain places around the house.

Martial Arts are only effective if someone who knows MA challenges you to an MA fight. Is that ever gonna happen here, or while I'm at an ATM or walking through a park with my beautiful wife or granddaughter? That's a big No.

But I do believe our special military forces still learn it, and that it can come in really handy for them.

True. Carrying a firearm is far better.

I started a Krav Maga membership for a few weeks then had to move out of state for a job, what I read was use lethal force when you have to and just to the extent you have to, then leave the area. Wanted to do Russian Systema but the school was too far away.
