A 20 pound rodent or species called the Nutria is spreading in California/the Bay Area at dangerous levels. It's basically a large rat that reproduces fast in large numbers and eats 25% of it's body weight in food a day. It's also considered dangerous. Even wildlife management says they must be stopped.

It's averages 2.5 ft long. They wind up destroying 10 times more than they eat and one produced 39 babies in a year.

Forgot to mention.

No known predator that would help control it.

I remember as a kid reading about these critters being imported to USA for the fur they had, but it never gained any popularity
with fur people, so they were set free to run rampant. Now they
have a bounty on dead ones....

The way people hug vermin these days, I won't be surprised to see Amazon selling hats and cute outfits for them. Followed soon after here by people cuddled in their beds with them.

A New York subway rat could probably handle a Nutria. Opportunists will probably figure a way to cash in on it, and we’ll have steel cage death matches featuring Nutria vs. themselves and other rodentia. Kinda gives the “rat race” a new meaning… 🙀
