That's about in line with costs here .. and then, there's tax & tip, which would add on a few dollars more.

I was astonished at the prices in the Chinese Take-away recently.. I used to have Chinese failry regularly before the O/H left, but in the 3 years he's been gone, I've probably had it twice.. and the other week I stopped off for something small..cost about £10... but the phone didn't stop ringing with orders while I was there and she was telling them their total at the end of their order... £45...£55...£65... over £100 was one order.. in the 15 minutes I was there just on phone orders alone, she must have taken...close to £700 ...unbelievable..

Our "it's really late, no time to cook meal," is fish & chips, which we had last night. Two regular size cod and chips £23:40. It used to be a cheap meal and there was always a queue, not anymore.
There is, however, if you are in the know, good bargains to be had. A popular pub/restaurant near has this offer:
Visit us after 5:00 pm on a Sunday for a £10 roast. You get a full, traditional meal for ten pounds. They are unsold lunchtime meals and good value they are too. There's many a pensioner there after five pm.
 
Oh, those far off, wonderful days, walking along the prom at Blackpool, with fish and chips wrapped in paper, and just the seagulls to fight off. 😊
Now with todays prices, I'd need a bodyguard to fend off the 'Fish and Chips Gangsters'. 😊

In the 1950s, fish and chips were a popular food for the working class, and a portion cost around 10 pence, or 1s 11d, which is equivalent to about 10 pence in today's money. Some fish and chip shops in the 1950s offered loyalty cards and discount vouchers for repeat customers. Hmmmm.. I can smell the salt and vinegar. 😊
 
We seldom eat out now. Not only is it expensive but the quality has gone down.
A trip to the grocery for a few things can be over $100! I saw this when shopping for he Grand children's visit. I bought more pre made food to have on hand. Frozen chicken nuggets and such are high.
One time they were here we went to Wendy's. $40! Next time we got "Biggie Bags". A five dollar bag of junk. 😊 Thing is, I'm used to that price now at fast food. Fast food is more expensive than the fajita meal we get on a Friday special!

We can still get our entire Chinese Buffet for $10. We eat lunch there a lot.

It's the national fast food chains that seem really high.

I did read that those big chains have discovered that a certain number of us simply won't pay that much, so some of the chains have at least one very (relatively) low priced meal on the menu for us tightwads. I've since looked for them and found them.

For example Arby's meals have gone way up but they have a special where you can get a regular roast beef and a chicken sandwich for six dollars. Perfect for Hubs and me.

You can hardly buy a rice dish for that here....
 
No idea what $18 is in British pounds but Cod and Chips costs me £11.61 ( includes an alcoholic drink)in Wetherspoons and their traditional breakfast is £3.41 around my way.That’s two hash browns,a sausage ,fried egg,two rashers of bacon,baked beans and toast.
And I paid an extra 73p for a slice of Black Pudding Ztoday
Pays to shop around for the cheapest places.
Even the large breakfast is only £5.99 and that’s basically double the traditional!

$18 equates to £9.30.
I am a tight wad and baulk at spending too much.
£3.41 is $6.60. No way would I be able to buy a breakfast with all those ingredients for that price. $16 or £8.38 minimum.

yep but you can't compare Weatherspoons to anywhere else because it's a discount pub.

well you can't buy it here either for that price... Weatherspoons is a discount food pub, they sell discount food ( which isn't very good tbh) and discount beer...

really the breakfast in the spoons is about the only meal that's recognisable.... everything else tastes bad..yet it remains popular with much of the public.. because it's cheap
