A lesson learned about being more aware of bank statements

Just got a call from the fraud dept of my bank. To verify some suspect charges. Most were correct, but they were showing charges for HULU, which I had cancelled back in the spring. They were still charging me!! So I talked with a live person from the bank (if you are patient enough you get a real person) and she is going to do her magic to charge them back.
Then I contacted HULU to say WTF. My online HULU account shows I cancelled it....so he pushed some magic buttons to allegedly deactivate the account.
I have to see if there is a way to block a site from charging my account

This is why I'm glad I bank online. I check my accounts a couple of times a week now. A couple of years ago, a similar thing happened with an Amazon credit card that I didn't keep good track of. I was letting my honorary daughter use it too. I assumed charges for books and Kindle stuff, etc were charges she had made because she is a reader. After mentioning something to her, we found out they had been charging her for a few months for a subscription she had canceled. She called Amazon and had them issue credits for all the extra÷ charges.

I'm glad you realized it before anymore charges were made Marie. I use credit cards for almost everything, that way charges can be disputed and reversed pretty easily. I hope the bank representative can indeed work her magic and credit your account for all the erroneous charges.

If push comes to shove, close that bank card account and have the bank issue a new card.
That way, all future charges will hit a "brick wall" against the closed account and old card number.
Dealing with some other life issues right now, but I will consider that option once I have more time and mental clarity to make all the online payment issues that come with it. BUT, I will wait to see if my account is now free of HULU.

To reiterate, I am taking this as a life lesson for me to be more observant...and if at least one other person in my life tells them self to do the same thing, then I have won

I check my bank and credit accounts regularly now, too. I also set up alerts on my credit cards to call me and verify any charge over $1,000. I did this after Wells Fargo pre-emptively blocked a $1,200 charge someone in London attempted to make. They blocked it, froze my card, called me, and immediately issued a new one. I was glad they were on top of things, but very nervous about how someone in London got my card number.

I mentioned it to a friend "Isn't it marvellous you can't get service in most shops today, skeleton staff, but if you tried to nick something they would come down on you like a ton of bricks, with all those security cameras". I was shopping in Coles the other day and I had an extra plastic bag from the fruit and veg. section but when I put it into my shopping bag the red light came on above me and an assistant came over to see what I was taking, I said it was just a plastic bag, so they said it was okay. Made me feel like a criminal. Yet they are licensed to rob us!!

According to a new FCC ruling, in about 6mos, it will be easier to cancel subscriptions and memberships instead of having to jump through hoops.

New rule makes it easier to cancel subscriptions, memberships: Here’s what it means to you

The FTC announced this week that sellers will be required to make a 'click to cancel’ option for consumers that is as easy to use as it was to initially sign up.

It will now be easier to cancel your subscriptions and memberships thanks to a new rule from the Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC announced this week that sellers will be required to make a ‘click to cancel’ option for consumers that is as easy to use as it was to initially sign up. For example, if a consumer signed up for a subscription on a website, they would need to be able to cancel it online rather than have to do it by phone or in person.

“Too often, businesses make people jump through endless hoops just to cancel a subscription,” said Commission Chair Lina M. Khan in a press release. “The FTC’s rule will end these tricks and traps, saving Americans time and money. Nobody should be stuck paying for a service they no longer want.”

The final rule is expected to go into effect in about six months, according to the commission.

The rule would also require sellers to get consent before making additional offers at the time of cancellation and will allow charges to immediately stop upon cancellation.

The agency said the rules are in response to thousands of complaints it receives each year regarding cancellation policies. According to the FTC, they received about 70 complaints a day this year on the issue.

A fact sheet detailing all the new changes can be found here.

5. @FTC's rule forbids businesses from tricking people into subscriptions, or keeping them trapped in one.

It will also require that firms obtain a customer's affirmative consent before making recurring charges.

Ho! Ho! That rings a bell! I lost 800 dollars because I neglected to carefully examine all my monthly bank statements, while naively assuming that the instructional audio disks I was receiving were free.

I was told by my bank to stop a place that "oops" charges after cancelling .... I had to replace my card.
it was a pain but I wanted it to done one and done instead of a continuing issue.
