Have You Tried Using A Large Print Keyboard White Keys and Black Letters?

I'd like to get a keyboard that is easier to see with my vision issues. Mine now is black with white letters, but I must use a flashlight sometimes when having to use numbers or other symbols. Not sure if I want a backlight if the keys are white with black bold letters.

I want one that's wired, compatible with Windows 10 or 11 for my desktop computer. I'd like a long cord, over 5 feet if possible, my computer area is cramped and hard to get behind the modem to plug things in. I've looked on Amazon, but too many to choose from.

Does anyone here have a special keyboard for low vision? If so, how do you like it? Thanks.

I see plenty of these, both black on white and black on yellow "large print" USB keyboards. Also some "illuminated key-backs" keyboards in this category.

Most have cables about 4 feet long, but a USB extension cord should work fine with keyboards.

But watch out for poor quality keyboards that may have sticky or too clicky or even "mushy" keys. The spacebar is a common "bad" key that rocks and sticks.

A problem with making specific recommendations is how quickly products turn over, A keyboard bought a year ago might not even be on the market anymore.

@SeaBreeze , you might could search for YouTube videos that demonstrate large print keyboards. Some may be only a brand, some many show many different kinds.

If your keyboard is good, there are large print sticker sets you can buy to make a regular keyboard large print. A lot cheaper than a new keyboard.

Just a few thoughts. Good luck.

Thank you Dustbunny.

Super short video I just looked up.

I know that keyboard would help me out. I hit a lot of double lettersd. :) I wonder what will happen when voice to text takes over the majority of our posts. I wonder if that will change the culture of our language habits. I have a feeling that it is going to change our communications significantly.

I never tried voice to text, I rarely text, but will have to learn to use it on my smartphone if I want to text. A lot of businesses, for tree trimming or landscaping tell you to text them. I try to just use my landline for a regular call, but that doesn't always work out. Old school and hanging on. :)

None my keyboards work and it frustrates me how long it takes me to type on the on screen keyboard. And the cataract in my left eye is also a problem.
I have one laptop that has an on screen option, never used it, only use the regular keyboard. The smartphone is on screen, and I have a lot of trouble tapping the right letters due to my vision. I had cataract surgery in both my eyes, also have advanced dry macular degeneration , which caused me to use a flashlight for almost everything.

Are you going to get the cataract surgery on your left eye?

I’ve been using a Visikey keyboard for years, and I’m as close to blind w/o officially being declared blind as they come!

and I also have a rubber cover with the large letters over it to protect the keyboard. They are for all computers, and plug into the computer.

Amazon should still carry this one, but I haven’t checked.

I used one for a while. The letters wore off faster than they did on the white-on-black keyboard I replaced.

You might do better with a lighted keyboard. That's what I have now. My keyboard has a subtle bluish-white light that glows behind the whole board. It's no strain to look at, and the letters really pop. Plus, it was cheap.

I hope that you find one that suits you, SeaBreeze.

I have a no name keyboard with white keys, just
normal size, I never thought about people who are
having difficulty seeing keys, it must be frustrating
and frightening.

Mike.

This is something I'm interested in as the lettering is wearing out on my old keyboard, at one time I had a backlit computer and found it very helpful so I'll probably look for that on my next purchase.

Good to hear it's subtle. Sometimes things are too bright, too dark, weird shading, etc.

My keys are a sort of brushed-silver with not-very-dark letters and numbers. I hate it.
That's how my newest laptop is, the silver keys and light lettering make me have to hover directly over it with the flashlight to see what I'm doing. Even my husband said it was strange and he had very good eyesight. I just use that for streaming. I can type without hunting for letters, but when it comes to using numbers, signs, etc. I have to look. That laptop has an on button placed in a strange place on the top row, I have to just look for that to get started.
