Who remembers these things back in the day ?...come and add your own memories..

Buying a pair of nylon stockings when I was about age 17...that would be 1950 or so
They were too expensive to buy normally so we wore rayon or silk if we were lucky.
What a treat!!

The early 1950's when circle skirts were very popular. Spin your lady on the dance floor and that skirt could defy gravity.

Nope it involves a horse chestnut ( conker) on a string, and being hit by your opponents conker, in an attempt to break it.. look here.. it's a kids game that even eccentric adults play to championship level..

Thanks HD. I knew a horse chestnut was involved but obviously I was confused about the finer points of the sport. Certainly some skill involved.

Did you know that they really are called a pissoir? They are also known as a vespasienne. A French invention, common in Europe, that provides a urinal in public space with a lightweight structure. The purpose of the pissoirs was to reduce urination onto buildings, sidewalks, or in the streets. Anyone who has been to France knows how laid back the French are with regards to body functions and nudity.

Wonder what the ladies did? Yeah, I wouldn't say that the French aren't particularly known for hygiene..;) They were still using variations of these on the street when I was in Paris in the '60s. Seems to me the stalls were not covered from the knees down.

We went drinking in a couple of bars. When you went to the men's room, there was just a hole in the cement! Not a pleasant smell either...☹️

Yes I remember those hole in the floor ''toilets'' even as recently as th 90's.. and in parts of Italy they still exist.

France has always had the deserved reputation of being less than hygenic..as you rightly say...

When my sister went to France on a holiday in 1962, she told us about those men's toilets. She said she looked at it in disbelief and the man relieving himself raised his hat to her.

I remember the song. I'm not sure I heard it when it was a new radio hit, but I do remember it... and I had a friend, same age as me, who used to sing it (a cappella, of course) sometimes. Anyhow, in my very early teens I heeded the advice.
