Abolish ALL Nuclear Weapons, Worldwide

A Catholic Priest, Rev. John Dear, is heading a movement aimed at eliminating ALL nuclear weapons. He has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. His editorial below was contained in a local paper here in Laughlin. His thoughts are worth the read, though rather long. Hopefully, my photo guy will get it legible! No One Really Cares?

Seems intense interest exists on this board occasionally, regarding perceived threats to North America's well-being, such as the Iran thing, but yet, very little is said about the proliferation of nukes.

Guess I just don't understand folks at all, or maybe it's my misconceptions regarding "Global Geo-Politics"? imp
 
Imp, I overlooked this yesterday. Of course I agree with the sentiments. I also remember and respect the Berrigan brothers. Civil disobedience is more than a right, it is a responsibility.

Heard someone say the big thing now is ballistic missile technology because that allows for long range delivery just like from a sub. It's those countries with the nuke and missile tech that are the worry. That's why many are worried about this Iran treaty because the missile tech doesn't get or probably won't the same kind of attention as the nuke program. They'll be more worried about soil samples and inspection of associated facilities. The missile manufacture & test areas might not get that attention.

It was only a matter of time and maybe it is a good thing because working on that tech might bring some of these countries into the first world. Hopefully responsibility follows.

To read Prime Minister Netanyahu's concerns, it seems obvious he fears a nuclear attack waged by Iran, against any of numerous countries. Given that what he says in his speeches regarding Iranian "credibility", have resolute underpinnings, it is safe to imagine a nuclear strike by Iran against some middle eastern country not only a possibility, but rather a certainty.

Such localized skirmish has historically produced TWO world wars. Should we just continue blindly ahead? imp
 
Frankly, at this point, IMHO, Bibi has little credibility. Initially, Israel hid it's nuclear capability, and still surrounds itself with a paranoid, elitist approach to world diplomacy. Perhaps if the Zionist elements in his country could be relied on not to commit war crimes against the Palestinians, and even threaten the foreign press with imprisonment or death, Mr Netanyahu's arguments against the Iran deal might carry more weight, instead of buckling under the weight of hypocrisy. Half of my family is Jewish, Bibi does not speak for any of us. Jew or Gentile, we are more afraid of Bibi's nukes, than Iran's. Shalom.

In May of 2015, the UN put up a bill to ban nuclear weapons and Canada, Britain and the US voted against it. Bizarrely even as Harper was voting against the ban, he was reiterating Canada's strong commitment to disarmament and non-proliferation and touting our 'nuclear-free zone' status!

Of course Israel was very pleased that their assorted 'pet' people and countries preserved their right to have nukes.

Must make for some 'energetic' discussions eh?

The unfortunate thing is that there are good folks and there are 'bad' folks in every people group and like most everything else in life, we remember the 'bad' ones and tar the whole lot with the same brush too often. I always remind myself that there are numerous Jewish people in Israel for example, working directly with the Palestinian people and trying to help them, Jewish human rights groups, peace groups, etc., so it's a loud and vocal contingent (not the whole) who are pleased with the status quo (sort of).
 
I hear you Debby, but it can be difficult for Canadian/American/British Jews et al who believe in disarmament to have to listen to the Zionist crap, and be targeted with the "self-hating Jew" label if they disagree. "Not in my name" carries consequences
for many Jews.
 
imp, I agree with every sentiment written by the good Reverand. But I also thought that one US state (New Mexico?) was going to sue your federal government because of the damages caused by nuclear testing. I know the Marshall Islands are in the process of doing so, but I was positive that I'd read the former as well.

By the way, the article in Newsweek is remarkable as it shows how a government can use all kinds of excuses to justify the unjustifiable.

Hmm, I wonder if that guy would consider radiation sickness, radiation burns, hair falling out, forced relocation and cancer and birth defects 'God's blessing'?

I'm sure it must be frustrating for the 'good' guys. I know I get a little irritated when I hear others mashing all Canadians because we allow the largest massacre of sea mammals to occur here every year for generations. I suppose all you can honestly do is correct their misunderstanding and tell that 'basher' that you/I have never supported XYZ and explain why we think it's wrong or incorrect or egregious. It's all about education isn't it?
