Ron is in the hospital

Thank you for all your well wishes. It really does help ❤️

His docs decided to keep him for another night. He's fine, but given his age and a slight elevation in his lactic acid and BP they decided to monitor him a bit longer.

I’m home for the night . I only slept for 3 hours last night and I’m so frazzled today from the lack of sleep and emotional upheaval that I decided I'd better get some rest or I was going to be useless.

He's got nerve blockers on board right now so there's little discomfort from the surgery. He’s joking with the staff and generally upbeat, though he’s also exhausted. Those blockers will wear off overnight and he's gonna be feeling it tomorrow. That's the final reason he needs to stay, so they can gauge his pain and RX accordingly.

I’ll head back to the hospital first thing. The driving is very wearing, it’s an hour away so I’m spending a couple hours on the road each day. The first hospital he was transported to was less than 15 minutes away and that would have been so convenient. I’m hoping to get his follow up visits, wound care and physical therapy at the original hospital or I’m going to spend so much time driving! 😣

So sorry to hear this, Ronni! Thanks for letting us know and keeping us updated. I'm just glad it wasn't worse than it is. Ron must be in pretty good physical shape if he fell 9 feet and the injuries weren't worse.

I know you finally got settled into your new place and now this happens. :( Sending the best of thoughts your way.

It may sound overwhelming but will settle into routine.
You can handle it.

Shower chair, potty chair, walker, wheel chair - what will insurance provide?
Grab bars!
Very good points! We have the walker and wheel chair lined up though no weight on that foot for 8-12 weeks so it will be a bit for the walker. But he can still use it to steady himself when he stands. He’s ok with the potty, but a shower chair is an excellent idea!!

He is in excellent physical shape for a senior, and especially for a 78 year old! The medical staff have been uniformly impressed with his good health. No meds other than an inhaler for a slight lung issue from working on the railroad for years before it was regulated! That’s also where his hearing issues happened. 😡

We have a modest home gym and he works out every day, to ensure a minimum of lost muscle mass and to maintain his strength. We both eat very healthily, minimum of processed foods, and lots of supplements. He’s already plotting how he can do a modified workout so that he maintains his strength. He’s an amazing man and I’m so proud of him. ❤️

@seadoug i should also mention that he .. er .. he falls well! 🤣

I know that sounds strange, but in the course of his heavy duty construction career he has taken a few falls. Once from the top of an 8 foot ladder, once through a skylight, went through a roof, and this is the first time he sustained any significant injury.

He says he becomes hyper-aware as he’s falling, and contorts his body as much as possible to hit the floor at the best possible angle!

He did that this time too, grabbing at things as he was falling, pushing against the walls and doing his best to flip his body around. He managed to stay more or less upright as he fell, which is why he doesn’t have head, neck, chest or spinal trauma, all of which are very common with this kind of fall.

His trauma team said that his injury is the best possible outcome considering what they typically see from this kind of fall.

My son was painting a metal roof last year. As he was trying to steady himself on the top step of the ladder, it started to slide, he attempted to grab the edge of the roof when it cut the forearm very deeply. He called out to the lady to help him get down. She nearly fainted when she saw the raw flesh and blood spurting out. He wrapped his arm in his shirt, and she hurried him off to the hospital. He had 8 stitches in the arm, and he went back to work to finish off the job. I was shocked when I saw the photo of his arm.

@oscash Ron has done that very thing!! I’m always shocked to discover that he didn’t come home after an injury, that he butterflied the gash closed so he could finish the job!!!

I’m a push-through kind of person, always have been, I don’t coddle myself or cut myself a lot of slack, but Ron has me beat hands down!
