The bane of the modern world "Nimby" rears it's ugly head again

Fremantle Western Australia, a working port for almost 130 years. A working class area for the majority of that time.
Bedraggled and forgotten for many years.
When Australia won the America's Cup in 1983, Australia earned the right to be hosts for the 26th America's Cup.
The race took place at Gage Roads off Fremantle Western Australia.
Fremantle was spruced up with millions of dollars spent to make the place "presentable" on the world stage.
Australia lost the defense of the cup and Fremantle fell into disrepair once more.
Fremantle has long been home to artists, musicians, bohemians, immigrants and the everyday people giving Fremantle it's culture, soul and vibrancy.
With this vibrancy and soul, Fremantle came to be seen as a trendy place to live. Monied people started buying into the scene, "gentrification" was the catch cry.
These monied people had their own ideas as to the direction Fremantle should be heading.
Trendy cafes along South Terrace started to proliferate. Smaller shop keepers were priced out as rents began to rise.
Derelict buildings were converted into high end apartments that only the "monied" people could afford.
These same monied people began complaining about the "riff raff" who were prominent on the streets after dark. These monied people began complaining about the many "Live Music" venues. Noise complaints came thick and fast until many live music venues were shut down.
The "Monied People" got their way. Fremantle was sterilised so the "gentrified" could walk their dogs to the "cappuccino strip" without having to come into contact with the riff raff.
This week a proposal was presented to council to redevelop the Fremantle Oval which is situated right alongside the "Strip"
The proposal is to build two residential towers within the confines of the oval. 240 apartments in the two towers. One 8 stories high, the other 9 stories high.
The development would include affordable and social housing in the make-up.
The proposal has caused friction with many of the wealthy residents.
A quote from one of these residents; There is enough affordable housing, we have too many issues with antisocial behaviour, drug and alcohol problems, dirty, smelly streets, not enough toilets. Affordable housing should not be build in this precinct, it will devalue our properties.

There it is NIMBY, let's not worry about all those homeless people, let's not worry about single parents being forced out onto the street because of rising rents, let's not worry about senior citizens forces to live in their cars, or tents because there is not enough affordable housing.
Let's only worry about how much profit I can make when I sell my million dollar apartment
These wealthy people do not want to live in the "real" world. They want an idyll existence centered around them and theirs.
I honestly hope the majority of Fremantle residents give this proposal the green light, not to spite the wealthy, but to look out for those who only want a place they can call home.

That is how it is everywhere where there are "Monied People".

precisely the same thing happens here.

Unanimous approval for Fremantle Oval Masterplan

A redeveloped Freo Oval precinct would host sporting fixtures, concerts and events.
Fremantle Council has unanimously approved a Masterplan for the redevelopment of the Fremantle Oval precinct.
The latest endorsement comes after a second round of community consultation in which 113 submissions were made.
Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge thanked the community for being involved in the process.

“We’ve taken all the community’s feedback into consideration. We’ve heard that, among other things, heritage and sightlines to neighbouring historic sites are greatly valued, and sustainable housing density is generally accepted.

“This project has been on the City’s radar for more than a decade, so it really is now or never, to bring this beloved place up to scratch for the next generation.

does this mean still no affordable housing ?

This particular sentence - the potential for affordable housing, seems to me that the developers do not want to build affordable housing.
I think I will write to council stating their initial communiqué - The development would include affordable and social housing in the make-up.

yes I was thinking that too.. and I was hoping that perhaps they'd just omitted the addition of the housing in the report..and that they'd build the sports ground with nearby housing..

People are wringing their hands over this same thing here, but feel powerless to moderate it. The developers of upscale homes, condos, and apartment buildings seem to have those charged with zoning and permits at their beck and call.

At one time development here had to have a balance between single family homes and low-income housing.

Such requirements have long since been waived, excusing this by saying parents now have "schools of choice." You can pretty much dump your kids anywhere. Now "school districts" are more like autonomous corporations isolated from their surrounding communities. Funding is still extracted from the residents based on the old boundaries but instead of going to local schools it goes to the State, which funnels back "what it needs" to each replacement for the old "school district" operations.

It's like the "grey goo" dream of the globalists, but on a more local scale. Identity and pride are dissolving.

This feels like a new chapter in the classic "white flight" where the monied from big cities packed up and hollowed out the cities. They'd build a new ring of suburbs, and then another ring, and another. Clutching the tax base in their fists as they fled and letting local businesses and infrastructure just die on the vine. The cities try to stay alive, but that has meant extractive "revenue sharing" and other ways of spreading their supporting taxation to everyone, with a lot of "skimming off the top" at the Federal bureaucracy level.

The well-off get richer through this wealth redistribution scheme. The small gas station owner in Iron Mountain carries the City of Detroit (500 miles away) on his back, just like the 7-figures tenured Professor with a mansion outside Ann Arbor (40 miles away).

The sports ground is an existing facility that has been there since 1895. It will remain as a sports ground, with development going on around it.

Fremantle Oval redevelopment Master Plan

I want to make a comment about the Fremantle Oval redevelopment Plan.
In mid October a communique was released regarding this plan.
It stated that - "The development would include affordable and social housing in the make-up."
A later notice released by you changed with this line - "the potential for affordable housing"

Why the change of wording? As I read this my first thought was that there will not be any affordable or social housing in the make up.
The original proposal was passed via community feedback. They never passed - "the potential for affordable housing".
Please assure me that your original statement will be the one you stand by.

We all know those at the lower end of the social scale desperately need a roof over their heads. One they can afford, thus being able to live with dignity.

I applaud you for your endeavour to include social and affordable housing in your vision for the future of Fremantle.

Brett .......

Regarding the social housing same thing happened in SA , many areas now have homes scattered / mixed in good and not so good ….bad reputation suburbs of Adelaide , however million $$$ earning researchers …. claims it’s far better than all the social housing / in this case Housing Trust …..together which ….were in allot of cases …are / were .more like Ghettos :eek: “dumping grounds “ as they were branded by media.

1000’s of HT homes have been sold off / homes demolished / land sold to developers, but many still remain homeless despite the state claiming they are building new homes ….the issue is the goverment want to sell many of the new homes that they’ve had built instead of offering them to low income earners to rent.

Of course I can only comment what’s happening in SA

@Bretrick

We have about 5 homes here near us that are called housing trust homes ….sadly regardless of where …SOME … people …..are placed in upmarket or lower incomes areas …..they seem to clutter front yards with unused furniture / cars

We visited and stayed in the Fremantle area the area in 2005 and visited the jail which was a tourist attraction then , however the reference to the prison reminded me of a prisoner who escaped from that facility ( Twice )

His name Brendon Abbott nicknamed the “ post card bandit “ while he was on the run he actually visited that prison as a “ tourist“ .and signed the visitors book ….

He was so cheeky he’d send the police photos of himself taken outside of police stations …how he got the name postcard bandit ….

I believe? he’s still in prison to this day , if he’d not escaped he would have been a free man any years ago ….last I heard if him he was still locked up

There was even a movie made about him “ the postcard bandit “

There will always be people without a social conscience or pride. I do not think that all social housing recipients fit into this category.
Many more are house-proud and only want to get on living life with dignity.

Developers should be disqualified for local government office. Talk about conflict of interests.

There are plans to close our local library near a station to build two tower blocks of "affordable housing", whatever that means. I'm actually all for providing affordable housing along the transport corridors to reduce the need for cars to get around, especially for employment.

I'm also in favour of local libraries with branches scattered across the municipalities. Surely social and affordable housing can co-exist with community centres and sporting venues? And parks and playgrounds? And dare I say, with old colonial era gaols?

Get some creative minds to work instead of handing the question over to big property developers who will probably erect fire traps for the poor.

Not talking to any particular member of Seniors here. Just venting. Forgive me, I'm not at all well but I'm also not at death's door.

In my mind it’s all just progress.

Why blame the ‘monied’ people for buying and developing property, why not blame the people who sell their dilapidated old buildings and move on to a better life. 🤔

IMO we need to do a better job of educating people so they can compete and thrive in the world without the government putting its thumb on the scale in an attempt to remove the risk and the reward of life.

That seems to be the issue here in SA ..the goverment sells the land where housing trust homes once stood to big corporate developers …..who no doubt only want to make profits
@Warrigal Many of the social home prices are unaffordable to the average worker

Fremantle was affordable before the "monied people" moved in. Real Estate agents took advantage of all the money being thrown around, artificially raising accommodation prices.
Pricing out long term, low income people.

I’d imagine ….Fremantle was very similar ….to Port Adelaide which was a working class “ Port “

Many of the older homes in PORT ADELAIDE …indicate it was a working class suburb as there are many homes built from corrugated iron with high pitched roofs for cooling in summer.

We do a reasonable amount of Shopping in P. A . as they have the shops I like all in one med size mall
Like Big W / Coles ,/ Nonib for clothing / bakery where I get my bread fresh veggie shop

Many struggling older people who worked all their lives….. but didn’t have superannuation , ( it was never compulsory for employers to pay workers super till …a few years ago )

Anyway many older people lived in caravan parks in purchased cabins or a huge van with a hard annex right by rivers or beaches ..now many of them are being evicted by greedy corporate’s who buy the caravan parks in prime positions to build homes worth millions , leaving many seniors with no where to go ….and no compensation for the loss of their homes….. ie cabin or van they can’t move and they’ve paid to buy as well as rent over the years for staying at the parks

( The stories have been on our nighty 7 pm show current affairs )

18 months ago a Sydney real estate agent advised landlords wanting to capitilise on the rental crisis that they can kick out long-term tenants to raise the rent.

I sent this scumbag an email at the time.

Wow, just wow, your words typify what capitalism is all about.
Profit, no matter who is thrown under the bus.
Your statement appals me, there will be landlords who will do exactly that.
Throw people out onto the street so that the landlord can make more profit than they already are making.
The sickening thing is that is legal to evict tenants for no other reason than to raise the rent.
You do know that people commit suicide because they have been thrown out of their home and have no prospects of ever having a roof over their heads for the rest of their lives?
Most certainly not every landlord has a mortgage. Many, many own their rental properties and are simply raking in the money.
You think this is okay, to evict people and have them live a life of destitution?
Attitudes like yours are the reason Australia's underclass is growing every year.
Shame on you, shame on the business community.

In Sydney it has been proposed that Rosehill Race Course should be sold and the site used to provide $25,000 new homes. The people opposing the sale are the owners (shareholders? Members of the Turf Club? ) and they have resorted to having the Premier of NSW referred to ICAC, which stands for Independent Commission Against Corruption. There's a lot of money backing opposition to the plan.

Sydney racecourse set to be replaced by 25,000 homes as state government commits to Metro West project
