Inmate beaten to death by prison employees

can anyone explain what exact training potential prison guards are given and what qualifications they may need to commence? there must be a starting grid surely?

Doesn't surprise me and actually quite common. The difference is that cameras are everywhere now. Doesn't matter if someone is guilty or not, no one deserves to be beaten while custody. People who condone this behavior don't realize, they are just one minor infraction or traffic stop of getting beat up.

anyone see louis theroux visiting hard core prisons in usa and interviewing everyone - they must have keep it clean and sanitized for him - didn't hear a bubble or squeak ? - he tries to show the real real thing - but sometimes doesn't seem to come out like we really know??
Watched his show; lots of shows on prison life these days.

Can't think of a soul who would condone this type of behavior. Those who did it will be dead men, will likely die the same death, once they get on the other side of the prison bars. Guards, cops, etc don't live long behind bars.

Am actually surprised this film came out, as am sure this happens frequently.
Jails and prisons are pretty hostile environments, full of personalities and behaviors that get them behind bars in the first place.

Can't even imagine having to go to work in one day after day.

Agree, Dusty. They sure did, if this video is accurate.

I just deplore the media, though, they sensationalize and thrive on feeding frenzies we see far too often. And then it gets completely attributed to it being a "COP". My son is a law enforcement officer...and during the riots and the BLM garbage, I could hardly sleep fearing some frenzied idiots would kill him - for ZERO reason.

Cops and correctional guards are both in a position of trust and anytime someone crosses the line, it is HORRIBLE - ESPECIALLY for those law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line and ARE trustworthy.
Not all law enforcement officers are holier than thou. There are actually quite a few nasty officers working right now. Just a cross section of society. I've encountered both. Some are just the former highschool bully types who can't find decent work elsewhere. I also seen a few get tightened up messing with the wrong person.

sometimes in a frenzy situation they forget everything except defending and rage - and so I can understand the cameras not getting turned off -however how did someone get a copy to release to the whole wide world before arrest; court cases and sentencing had taken place - wasn't that rather naughty?

It was Leticia James, she says right in the video she was the one who brought it to the attention of the family and then decided to released the video to the public. One of the food guys, prison guards, obviously reported it. It went up through channels..and when Leticia James got ahold of it, she said released it.

Normally, a video like that would be held until a trial is completed; not distributed to the public. Hence, once I SAW the entire video, re-ran it about 8 times, looked for other versions, was outraged at not just the guards, but at an Attorney General who put it out for the public to see, even before a trial is set.

A sad day for American judicial system. Disgusting.

Sad when someone is bashed to death by a group of officers.

I looked this info up because this prison in a town called Port Augusta , South Australia ..about 3 hours drive from the city of Adelaide…. this prision … has a few notorious prisoners….which I won’t go into apart from the fact they have never applied for parole as they are happy to stay where they are…

This location advertises on TV ..5 pm time slot each and every day , they must have a huge turn over of workers .??

Some info on what prison officers are called in Australia and their role / responsibilities/ training
it seems this location trains “on the job ”

well we can always say all the 'nice' things on paper to hand out to the world - but behind closed doors I don't think the rulebook is carried around in everyones back pocket. Just another thought - I assume all info so far applies to female correctional officers also or do they have a separate rulebook?

sounds pretty thorough but of course nothing is absolutely foolproof. But a good start to it all if it is rigorously carried out at all times? like eg - is it a mandatory procedure which cannot be omitted?
Here in the US there are so many different levels of law enforcement all the way down to guards; but guards - as difficult a job, and thankless a job they have, are no more perfect than any of us; agree on that.

It is just that "guards" and "police" hold a different place in my vocabulary, knowing what I have learned, read, and seen in real life here in the US, as well as in the military.

Perhaps to cut back on some of this guard behavior - they need mandatory psych evals, testing, etc.
I would speculate that the lower on the personnel pay scale in Fed-State-City-County-Jail levels of guards, and the size of the institution the more likely you will see less sophisticated, cruel incidents like this from Guards.

Heads are going to roll a long way up, I would hope.

They do, but that doesn't serve the purpose of the likes of Leticia James. About 1% of the positive things LEOs do is presented; and 100% of ANYTHING that makes them scapegoats.

You are CLEARLY bigoted as Leticia James. You constantly ATTACK police officers on this site. She is apparently just more specific: white police officers, and white males, are her target. Anyone who doesn't agree with her LOUD MOUTH behaviors. She has been brought up on unethical behaviors more than once, and things are still pending on much of the issues of her unethical behaviors while holding an elected office.

And she released THIS video clearly to push her bigoted agenda against the white man and cops, even though later in the film she tries to cover her a$$ by saying BS....about how she debated whether to release this or not...in the interest of the public. That is pure horse hockey: it wasn't in the interest of the public or a fair trial, either, for these men! She is doing a PUBLIC HANGING and not following the rules of law!

Did you notice her film was carefully edited? That the film of the officers was carefully edited so out of 14 guards being disciplined it shows only five. And ALL five are white male guards, how convenient? Where are the black guards, the female guards?

The beating makes me sick, the release of the video by a public official - in a position of trust - one who is a bigot makes me sick. She is a disgusting human being: same as the officers.
Yea, I don't know where your diatribe about Leticia James comes from, and don't really care, but it's clear that these officers intentionally screwed over this inmate, with a great degree of malice. I don't know what the inmate did to piss off the officers, but what-ever it was, he didn't deserve to be beaten to death, especially by those changed with supervising his custody.

Same here in the states; pay ranges from $24,000 yr at the lowest end to about 54K at the highest end. I have two guards across the street from me, a married couple. "Jailers" aka "Guards" have an extremely high turnover rate and states often contract out nearly 100% of their needs, for services and many for guards; just as they contract for nurses and physicians.

Totally agree. It is just that when I checked out the film further, as it seemed the woman speaking - it looked odd, felt odd; then I checked the footage, watched the men, looking for identification of WHO these people were, acting like THAT!

Leticia James came up because I realized it was New York. 5 white men. That is hallmark Leticia James: she is a bigot. She only works for blacks and not white. Had it been a white man being beat up: SHE never would have put it out there. She did it to further her own personal vendettas. That is illegal in the US.

actually the average salary for a prison officer in NYS..is over $62,000 dollars per year .. and that's bound to come with all sorts of additions , medial etc...

What's more likely to be the reason is that they've done this on numerous occasions and never even caught or Indicted for it...
I think it takes a certain mentality to get into that line of work and not all of them are necessarily nice people.

and I thought we all lived in a God fearing or is that God loving society ? and lived by the rule of law - which demands high standards of care and treatment of all whether you are locked up in a prison cell or lying on a trolley awaiting and ECT event?
