I haven't touched any retirement or investment money in the six years I've been receiving SS. I'm not living poor either, I spend money on trips and home projects often and still stay ahead financially, but it sure helped to go into retirement debt free.

I am thinking it's time for a new car so my experiment in frugality will have to start again after that purchase.

Recommend you lease with full warranty for vehicle and max mileage if you want to travel about. UR in Cal.

Today president Biden signed into law the social security fairness act. It was a big event and I’m very grateful. A 81 year old teacher will no longer have to work 3 days a week at the Dollar store after her husband died because she can now receive spousal social security.

Yes, I live only on my social security. However, I do have other sources of income but I refuse to touch them because I want to leave as much money as possible to my son when I croak. My paternal grandfather was a wealthy banker and when he died in 1958 all his wealth went to his second wife, who was no relation to my family, and when she died all my grandfather's millions went to her second husband. My father said nothing but I knew he was smoldering inside and I don't blame him one bit. Anyway, my will is made out and I will never remarry. My son gets all my loot.

Hmm…. Somehow this seems weird.

In a discussion of people who have only their SS check to live on, we are now discussing giving more money to people who were able to avoid paying some SS taxes (resulting in a fatter paycheck) and who also have a pension. Meanwhile people who paid into SS during the work life but have no pension have to struggle with just a SS check to get by on.

Everyone knows SS is supposed to ONLY be a supplement; is not a pension/IRA/SAVINGS for our retirements. The government doesn't take care of you for you. You supposed to do so. The people who also have a pension worked to get it, or saved up to get that pension.

social security is an insurance program that should be paid to those who paid the premiums, not to those who didn’t

the system can’t support those who paid in , without trying to support those who didn’t.

the system unless fixed should have everyone eating what they kill.

Sadly, I’m only 70 and I’ve already drawn more from Social Security than I paid in.

Social Security worked and the flaws were masked in an age of large families, an increasing work force, etc… as sort of a government sponsored Ponzi scheme.

Now we have a system that’s too big to fail.

It will be interesting to see what happens to fix or replace it.
