Is there a place for my wife and I, living on SS?

But there are trade-offs... personally I wouldn't be willing to make them. Yes, Wichita has a lower cost of living, however:

(from AI)
"Wichita, Kansas has a higher crime rate than other metro areas of similar size. In 2022, Wichita's violent crime and property crime rates were higher than the national average."

(from NeighborhoodScout Security Guage)
With a crime rate of 59 per one thousand residents, Wichita has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes
Get out of here with your facts and logic. Thanks for showing the actual stats for that particular city. JIM.

Don't come to the Willamette Valley because there are long waiting lists to get into affordable housing and it can take several years to get to the top of the list. Buying a house is also a challenge because we have a housing shortage and we ran out of room for building housing. Single-family homes and being replaced with multiple-family housing. We have a huge homeless population including elderly and disabled people, despite the city's excellent attempt to provide housing and services. The more the city did, the more homeless people came here.

You could say exactly the same about the USA, in terms of crime, gangs and drug trafficking. JIM.
I know you hate the US, but Costa Rica's homicide rate is about three times ours. And most of our violent crime is concentrated in 20 or so big cities. If you don't live in a bad neighborhood in one of those cities, the US is actually very safe, with property crime rates below those of countries such as France, Denmark and the Netherlands.

When living strictly on SS and considering where to live, there are many things to consider but one of the first I'd look at is how the state and city tax structure would impact my income. The state in which I live has no taxes on SS, so that's part of the pluses.

I am looking for real information not AI. We almost moved to Wichita last summer. Real estate is high and higher end is at DFW price points.
I lived there in the past and still have family there. The house my ex and I built 31 years ago in a really nice suburb is only worth 230k. I paid almost that much for my little condo in Reno. Everything else is cheaper there too.

Most of that crime you mentioned Kate is probably occurring in the ghetto where no one goes. It’s the same in midwestern cities. The town I grew up in only had 60k people at the time and everyone knew to stay out of the ghetto.

Crime in the US in bigger cities is usually concentrated in one area and people know to stay out of the area. It’s not everywhere. I have family there and have lived there. I have lived in many midwestern cities where this is also the case.

I don't hate the USA, but I DO feel sorry for your country. Its now approaching third world status, in any number of measurements. But go ahead and keep on telling your self that everything is OK.

It's not OK here. But your constant carping is tiresome. Our GDP per capita is about 50 percent higher than Canada's so maybe you should keep your anti-US BS to yourself, or stick to criticizing that boring slice of tundra you call home.

There are tons of things one can do to cut retirement costs. Stay home, take Taxi, don't pay insurances.
Don't buy cells and Services from Waldo, only get used reclaimers, Only buy meats on sale, the cheapest
cuts and only stew the small pieces with your fresh veggies, the expensive cuts are just as tough. Buy
day old bread, only drink fresh tap water, don't take showers often, sponge off.

Forget the high costs of body lotions, Perfumes, after shaves. trim your beard with a sharp knife.
Sleep separately on rocker recliners in one room with wide screen and HD indoors antenna. Only heat that
one small room. Use only wallboard heat. Cut out all fans, gas appliances, have instant hot water heater at
that only sink. When you get a water leak it can be a disaster cost wise. Same with clogged sewer.

Walk down to the neighborhood Lowes to crap. Shut off all water stuff, like stools, garbage disposals
Water meter, that sort of stuff. Remove these residuals and your living costs plumet. Put trash & all waste
in shopping bags and toss off local bridge around 3 in the mornings.

You only need to eat once a day, make it count with minimum stuff except fresh mostly uncooked veggies.

Never do big gulps, only hot or cold water. U don't need coffee or tea to get thru the day. Never snack or
have junk food. Rest when you are tired, pace and ride an exercise bike when awake. If you have a bicycle
or power chair, store them indoor.

If you need entertainment walk / bike to your neighborhood park or Bike trail. Duck, Squirrel, Pidgeon watching,
Count the Jets flying overhead, Jet fighters whistle and roar loudly. Watch for Deer strikes by 18 Wheelers if
you live near I-state with woods near. If in a City watch accidents start.

Some of the best stuff is free. You got plenty of time to get tired and nap a lot. It didn't cost you a dime when
growing up young, why should it be expensive to grow up an elder.

Time spent behind bars, good food, warm clothes, free health and great, silent company. The worse you age
the quicker you realize you been behind them anyway. 265,000 elders!
Lots of young immigrants have lived that a ways.

America’s prison system is turning into a de facto nursing home

Falling for stuff or over stuff is your worst, I didn't see it coming.

Can't stand honest criticism ? Funny how a country that enshrines "free speech" such as yours, cannot bear to be shown it's problems. Pull the covers up over your head, and go back to sleep.

I went house shopping and we have a number of friends who moved to Wichita. Nothing! Yes, I am a bit particular when it comes to our nest.

Of course one can find something with a bit of insistance. Every place has an area that is not particularly p!easant.

Wichita has some nice suburbs and parts of Wichita itself are very nice. I’m surprised you haven’t found anything. My ex’s wife came into the marriage with a 1500 sq ft townhome that they used as a rental. It was nice and they just sold it and were thrilled to get 100k. You can’t buy a studio in a bad neighborhood here for that price.

Well lets take a look at living on SS in Toronto and life there.

Canada's priciest properties include exorbitant rent and near impossible real estate
Crowded and people aren't very friendly, in person or on most forums
Smog and pollution ... well, epic air, noise & light pollution
Nightmare-ish traffic, dangerous bike lanes and you'll never be without endless construction going on
High cost of living and expect to pay more for all goods and services. Dig deep for groceries and phone plans
May be free, but expect long waits for medical issues and pay more for expensive dental treatments
HIgh taxes. Among the highest in all of Canada
But HEY, your dollar will be worth more than theirs. So there's that.

How safe is Toronto you might ask?
Not as safe as Taipei, Munich, and Jerusalem or even Quebec City or Ottawa
The homicide rate per 100,000 is comparable to modern day New York
Toronto's robbery rate is pretty high. Much higher than Los Angeles, New York City, San Diego and Portland
And higher than Vancouver and Montreal
Large criminal organizations have been operating in the Toronto region since at least the mid-19th century
... and biker gangs as well as youth gangs all round

So would relocating to Toronto make sense? ... :ROFLMAO: Fogetaboutit

You left out the balmy weather.

Why have you put your email address on a public forum?
That doesn't seem wise to me - and of course it wouldn't be wise for others contact you by email when they don't know you either.
Makes sense when you're trying to sell something or get traffic to your website, perhaps... which is where the email sends you.

Moving to a foreign country means saying goodbye to family and friends, so, no.
Not necessarily but unless you speak the language, can deal with the food and are able to accept local ways - it works for many. The problems start with health issues especially when you rely on an expat group for day to day interaction and live in your enclave.
