Remember Ray Nagin and Hurricane Katrina?

Ten years ago yesterday, New Orleans was devastated. Can it possibly be that long ago, already? Ray Nagin was the City's Mayor. Given the question of news reporting's various inequities, I thought he did a damned good job, given what he had to work with. 1245 killed, $108 Million in property damage. He bucked heads with FEMA effectively, I thought.

Ray Nagin today is an incarceree in Federal Prison.

Fancy that? imp

On January 18, 2013, Nagin was indicted on 21 corruption charges, including wire fraud, conspiracy, bribery, money laundering, and filing false tax returns related to bribes from city contractors.[SUP][6][60][/SUP] The 21-count federal corruption charges were issued by a grand jury.[SUP][61][/SUP] On February 20, 2013, Nagin pleaded not guilty in federal court to all charges.[SUP][4][62][/SUP] Despite New Orleans' long history of political corruption, Nagin was the first mayor to be criminally charged for corruption in office.[SUP][63][/SUP]

Nagin was convicted on 20 of the 21 counts by jury on February 12, 2014.[SUP][5][/SUP] These charges included that he had taken more than $500,000 in payouts from businessmen in exchange for millions of dollars' worth of city contracts.[SUP][5][64]

Judge Helen Ginger Berrigan, a Bill Clinton appointee to the federal bench, ordered a pre-sentencing investigation. On July 9, 2014, Nagin was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment, and more than $585,000 in restitution and forfeiture.[SUP][8][/SUP] Berrigan recommended that Nagin be sent to the Federal Correctional Complex, Oakdale.[SUP][65][/SUP] On July 15, 2014, Nagin's attorney filed an appeal with the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.[SUP][66]

On September 3, 2014, a judge deemed Nagin indigent and ordered the Federal Public Defender's Office to take over his appeal. Nagin said he was near penniless and said he was receiving food stamps support.[SUP][67][/SUP] Nagin reported to the Federal Correctional Institution, Texarkana, a prison camp, on September 8, 2014.[SUP][68][/SUP] Nagin, Bureau of Prisons (BOP)#32751-034, is located in this facility.[SUP][69]

I was very disappointed in Ray Nagin. Hoped he would go on to do great things. (sigh)

There is no parole for Federal prison sentences here. 10 yrs is 10 yrs.

Do not be sorry for any derog imposed on me! When I consider the flagrant corruption I have seen at all levels of Federal Government, I must hold in abeyance personal impressions of Federal Justice results. Why do all seem satisfied that a Federally-imposed sentence was NOT affected in some corrupt fashion? What better way to "get rid" of potential political troublemakers.

Anyone remember the head of FEMA during the Katrina clean-up? At odds with Ray Nagin every step of the way, in the Administration's "pocket". Who else knows about the several thousand temporary dwellings moved in to aid homeless victims, those dwellings later found to be dangerously toxic with urethane and other poisons? This is AID provided by Federal-level officials, who should have the wherewithal of employing people technically able to advise them properly to avoid such calamity.

How do we know Ray Nagin deserved what he got? imp

I was so sad hearing the initial news. Then between Nagin and Dubya and everyone else. The ninth ward was like f Newark after the '68 riots...oh well. Like Boston Strong residents have tried to rebuild, but like survivor's of Hurricane Sandy, FEMA and all the other government helpers weren't there to help.
