Why is it...

...that a lot of people using cell phones in public places don't need a phone? Their voice level is loud enough to be heard in the next county. Being new here it's probably been discussed many times, but it's one of my biggest pet peeves. Why talk so loudly??!!!

I was using a gift certificate for a pedicure last week and a young woman walked in talking so loudly on her phone that everyone in there turned to stare. The conversation lasted for at least 15 minutes and the things she was saying were meant to impress....things like, "I have a date with a guy tonight who's loaded and we're going to....(very expensive restaurant,) and this B-S went on and on and on. I'm thinking it's very insecure people who do this and it's their pathetic way of impressing. Cell phones in public places should be banned!

Katy i have been subjected to that many times, and all i can think is that they feel it big notes them makes them feel important, or being in a public place they talk loud as they can't hear the person on the phone very well, it is just so annoying. The ones who stay on their mobile talking while being served i consider to be very rude, i have seen a girl refuse to serve a person until they hung up.

At the dr's office on Sat, there was a huge sign on the front door as you walked in...PLEASE TURN OFF CELL PHONES. Totally disregarding, at least half the people waiting were chatting away, but at least they were talking quietly. It's the obnoxious ones that get me. Aaarrrgh!!! And on a Saturday, I'm sure none were business calls, just an obsession these days.

Don't you love the ones who fix their eyes on you while they're talking to someone else? Is that weird or what?

I'm sure they're just fantasizing that their partner is as sexy as I am.

Sometimes I just want to B-slap these people with their phones glued to their heads. I swear, in the next generation we're going to be seeing some interesting genetic abnormalities - one huge ear, one totally missing; voices that can crack windows on the next block; super-strong arm on one side, withered arm on the other; the fingers of one hand will be cell-phone-button-sized.

Often when I go to the convenience store up the street, all 3 clerks will be playing Candy Crush on their phones. One time I actually threw a load of bread at one of them to get their attention. They weren't too happy about that - "I was just beating Level 275, dude!"

If you don't start paying attention to your customers I'll send you to Level 5 of Hell. :devilish:

Idiots.

They've obviously switched their visual input circuits over to bolster the aural signal. Gasp!!! They're ROBOTS ! aaagh.

They've banned talking on mobile/cell phones while driving here, presume they have there?
So many fatalities have been pinned to phone calls while driving that the message has finally gotten through.
If they can't register what they're doing and looking at in a Mall during a phone call how much attention are they paying on the road?

I hate the ones who talk into an earpiece that i can't see, many times i have answered only to be shown the mobile phone, it seems people are obsessed with their phones, it's like a security blanket which makes them feel good while sitting waiting for the Doctor or whatever they are doing

I think a few states have banned talking/texting, but not nearly enough. So many lives maimed & lost because of it -- to me they may as well have an alcoholic beverage in their hand. Ridiculous that every car beside me at a traffic light has a driver w/a cell phone to their ear!!!! It's to the point of absurdity,

My big concern is seeing these truck drivers with a phone in their hand and going around a roundabout, sheer negligence, you can't tell me he has control of that truck, i feel the use of mobile phones in vehicles should be banned, they should all be turned off until they finish driving, you can always tell by the way a car or truck is driving that they are on the phone, they are all over the place due to lack of concentration, i back right off when i see that.

I'm afraid it's a useless battle when I hear of Vodka being poured into a water bottle so they can drink & drive. Too many compulsive people out there to control the cell phones usage. So sad.....

Getting flogged with a $270+ fine and 3 points off your licence has jerked the reins on driving phone calls fairly well here.
There are still a fair ratio of idiots doing it but nowhere near as many as there could be.

The cops are having a ball pinging them. You dare not scratch your ear for fear of getting pulled over on suspicion of using a phone. It's doing wonders for their fines quotas.

Even 'hands free' phone calls are dangerous but as truck drivers rely on CB radio I doubt that will ever be stopped.

Our laws for talking / texting while driving are messed up. Big surprise.

  • Hand-held Cell Phone Use: 12 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands prohibit all drivers from using hand-held cell phones while driving. Beginning in October 2013, all laws will be primary enforcement—an officer may cite a driver for using a hand-held cell phone without any other traffic offense taking place.

  • All Cell Phone Use: No state bans all cell phone use for all drivers, but 37 states and D.C. ban all cell phone use by novice drivers, and 19 states and D.C. prohibit it for school bus drivers.

  • Text Messaging: Washington was the first state to pass a texting ban in 2007. Currently, 41 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands ban text messaging for all drivers. All but 4 have primary enforcement.
    • An additional 6 states prohibit text messaging by novice drivers.
    • 3 states restrict school bus drivers from texting.

Yeah, that should do it. Anyone with a law degree could follow that.

I guess you have the 'snivell' libertarians protesting about the rights of phone addicts to endanger the lives of those around them too??

... and THOSE are just for Tuesdays!

We're pretty agitated about our personal freedoms here, and with good reason, since they're being taken away on an almost daily basis. But when a behavior crosses the line and endangers others, THAT is when some sort of law SHOULD be enacted.

Unfortunately we also have 50 separate states making their own versions of those laws that may or may not supersede any law the Federal government comes out with.

In other words, yes, it's a mess. When I become King I plan to make a single, simple announcement that anyone caught using a cell phone in any capacity while driving anything will be summarily executed.

And when you become King Phil, please enforce strict limitations in using them in all public places. They must go outside to conduct a conversation! It's only common courtesy, but what do we commoners know??!!

Want to be sure I'm clear on this, Phil, as listed in your first paragraph,....."beginning October, 2013 all drivers.....will that apply throughout the country? If so, I need to inform my employer who phones & texts & drives (with us in the car) at the same time ALL THE TIME! His son and I would be thrilled to death if the law would apply to NC as well. I've never seen anyone phone & text simultaneously, but he puts one party on hold & texts away. Granted, he is doing business, but it's extremely dangerous and nothing we've told him gets through to him. Perhaps this law will get his attention if it's applicable here.

I live in Washington state, the cell phone laws are a joke like everything else.

We still see people yaking it up on their cells phones all the time while driving and texting and whateverthehell else they use them for.

One of these days I am seriously going to blow a gasket at the store, you have some ditzy woman ahead of you in line yaking away on her phone and trying to use her debit card one handed and can't even be bothered to hang up as she is trying to push the cart out and put her bags in the car, still yaking away.

People are addicted to their phones and texting. It borders on mania. There is some sort of hive mind mentality going on.

This is my number one pet peeve, it surpasses every other grip I have by leaps and bounds. It will never be topped.

I was actually listening to a cell phone commercial the other day and some people where complaining because their phone doesn't download movies fast enough ?!?!?

It's a frickin' phone not a mobile pocket size Bijou Theater. Why do you need to download movies to your phone? and when would you be watching these movies on your phone anyway? We have TV screens the size of billboards in our homes and now we are watching movies on a screen the size of a matchbook?!

Cell phones annoy me and my husband so much so that we not only bitch about them, we don't have one and don't plan on getting any either.

Oh thing about the blue-tooth, they would be real handy for those crazy people you see walking around talking to themselves, this way they could just look like every other nutter walking around talking to somebody non stop.

Illegal to talk or text while driving here in N.S. And I've heard, but haven't confirmed that if you are in an accident while using a cell phone, it is automatically deemed to be your fault, regardless of it was or not.

Extremely well stated and my sentiments exactly. I have one for safety reasons only and refuse to give the number out to anyone other than employer and family....YET the damned telemarketers have somehow found it and pester me to death. At this point it is far more of a nuisance to me than help.

The coppers need to stand inforcing the law. If you get caught texting or talking or playing games or watching movies while driving, they immediately take your phone and stomp on it.

We have hands-free calling in our pick-up truck, we can use it if we have an emergency. 100 miutes will last us the rest of our lives I am sure.

Well-stated, Loyal Subject Katybug - here's a few acres for your wonderful suggestion!

No, I believe it refers only to the 12 states and D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands where the "all drivers" laws are in effect.

Here's a chart that shows a state-by-state breakdown of current cell phone / driving laws.

Unfortunately, the only thing that gets through to people like that is a death, theirs or someone else's, and sometimes not even in the latter case.

I don't know if I dislike people who continue to talk/texted and drive because they're rude ignoramuses or I love them because they're rebels.

When some twit is jabbering on their phone at excessive levels, I like to join in the conversation . . .
