How to safe $1,500? By replacing a water heater myself with the help of my son-in-law.
In 2009, I replaced a water heater with the help of a friend. After 17 years, it was on the way out. I had 2 offers to do the whole job for
around $3K; while just replacing the water heater itself, without including the purchase of a new one, was supposed to be around $1,500.
My son-in-law and I did the whole job in 5 hours: buying a top-of-the-line water heater for $880 with a 12-year warranty at Home Depot, bringing it home, draining the old water heater and loading it on our dump trailer, and installing the new one.

At this very moment, my older daughter is flying over the Bering Sea on her almost 14 hour flight back to Hong Kong and her job in China
