It is a strong wind coming from just the right direction, blowing the thawing ice up onto land.
I have seen the wind take the snow and make it into hundreds of snowballs that go rolling across the open areas. They are called snow rollers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25aXeczy3DE

You wouldn't believe how much I have to learn about snow. I've only ever seen it a couple of times, from a distance, and stood on some once, wearing sandals. Long story.

Snow is quite beautiful. It is also a wonderful sound insulator. Dogs just seem to love it.

That did sound very poetic, Anne.
I love to look at snow in pictures, it's so cozy and peaceful. If I had to live with it, altogether different situation. I would have to move. My blood is way too thin and the sprinkling of it we get every other year or so is too much for me. I have to say tho, some of the nicest people I've ever met are from MN.
