My debit card number was hacked!!

I misunderstood, thought when you said the bank charged them back to your account, that they remained there and you lost the money. I'm glad you had a good ending, money is tight enough without getting ripped off by some thieves.
Yes....I should have said CREDITED back to my account. Typing tired

Does your bank offer alerts. Every day my bank sends me an email with a balance updates.
I also have alerts on my checking and credit cards. Anything over a dollar generates an instant alert and they send me an email.
Last week I went to the Piggly Wiggly and by the time I got to the parking lot I had an email.
I think I have one CC with alerts....I'm going to check my bank to see if they have it, I would like to have the balance every day....good info..thanks.

I do not do online banking but I am signed up for alerts, anything over a $100, I receive an alert from my bank in my email. I also do not do texting.

Online banking is so convenient. You should try it.
I keep my alerts at a dollar. Thieves will make several small purchases to make sure it will go thru. If that works then they go charge crazy.
I dont text either. Its too aggravating.

No thank you, not for me, especially after listening to numerous people in the news who were hacked and that the bank that they used would not refund their money. However, I do have telephone banking set up.

Usually the banks refuse to refund debit cards; your use, your responsibility. Credit cards are backed by the banks.

By the time I walk out of a store at the latest, my watch has signalled that I used the card. I won’t use a debit card.

The skimmers can also get CC information.
It can also be done if place you went a legit business got their POS information hacked. It does happen many banks may flag and message you to see if charge was legit.
If who ever gets the stolen # they try ASAP to charge something often in different countries or far enough away it is easy to show NOT the card holder. Someone hacked a business I bought from. when i tried to use card it was already on hold and unusable as bank saw the fake attempt asap. It was a bit of inconvenience to wait for new card but i had other methods of payment available.
Just yesterday at a store i saw a person working for store with a tool that he went to each terminal and inserted to make sure no skimmers ...on machine. sad it comes to that an employee checks each terminal in a fairly busy store it must be quick and easy to install one.

of course any cards can be hacked .

but what the laws are when that happens are different.

as well as the bank can open an investigation and that can have no time limit as to when and if you will see your money replaced .

loads of debit card horror stories out there inclu lots of intervention by a local news channel getting involved when banks say sorry

Maybe that is a problem with the bank or the security the bank offers... not all banks are alike.

I did not know how quickly and professional my bank would handle things until it happened to me.
Security on card or info theft is a joint effort with people checking any charges on their cards and working with bank not expecting the bank to be the only defense.
In the horror stories you speak of did they alert bank immediately? If bank did not catch first. The only stories i saw with 'news " involved were people who did not report in time....... some banks have a limited time for fraudulent transactions to be reported.

Banks and Credit unions have more information of what is going on with fraud....... and one of reasons my bank responded so quickly was they were trying to make purchase in one city for several cards of the banks customers. This was a local bank on the west coast of US and the people who hacked were trying to buy a bunch of things in Toronto.

Usually they freeze your card after one or two suspicious charges. You then cancel the card and get a new number. This has happened to us. At least that is how it works for our credit card.

Given how many people are given your number it is surprising that it doesn’t happen more often than it does.

I stopped using a debit card after the third hack. And checks after someone used my routing/account number to try buying a $1K phone. Luckily, I have alerts and didn’t lose any $. I now run all my expenses through a single cash back Visa CC. If I purchase something in person, I use the touchless airpay or tap. No sliding the card.

I used to travel extensively for work and leisure, so that multiplied the chances for hacks. Lesson learned.

My card is linked with Master Card, so I can use it as either. I misspoke in saying it was just a debit....I always use the credit option/ I can check my bank balance on line.....a "new purchase" will show as pending until it clears
From what I know, banks are under no obligation to restore fraudulent debit charges. However, they do so immediately with CCs. I only use my debit card at ATMs at my bank's branches. All else, I use a CC. I also carry cash. Right now there's $92 in my purse - I just checked.)

Like others, I get emails from my banks and CC companies: immediate notifications of changes plus a daily balance email.

Right now I am rather nervous about putting my card number out there. I mean, the places I use it I have used it regularly, so I do not know where it was hacked FROM.
I , also, rarely use debit, unless getting cash at an ATM. Not sure if it matters, but I wonder if it is better to use your own bank ATM, rather than an outside one (like at the grocery store) Any thoughts?
This has gotten my anxiety levels through the roof.

there are so many loopholes for banks not to make good on fraudulent debit card use .

especially if pins are involved .

looking at visas zero liability fine print says if the transaction was done thru a non visa network you aren’t covered .

like you can control what the bad guys use

“ Visa’s Zero Liability Policy does not apply to transactions not processed by Visa.”

bottom line for me is , i would never ever use a debit card where i could use a credit card , except for taking cash at a bank
I feel the same, and my CC card is from a different institution than where I have savings/checking at. In my opinion a debit card is a direct conduit to your checking and savings accounts, no way do I want to open that gate for potential theft or fraud.

This may be so.

However, when it comes to CCs, I don't know anyone who hasn't been made whole by their CC company for fraudulent transactions. CC companies may not be obligated to do so, but they do. They don't want the bad press.

(I don't even know what a "non-Visa network" might be. Looked it up and the definition isn't clear.)

Exactly. I have one debit card attached to one checking account. For all other banking I've declined debit (or credit) cards. My CCs are from institutions unrelated to checking or savings.

it depends on the situation. we have channel 7 involved here in so many cases of debit card fraud trying to get peoples money back that were denied

In the days before plastic people occasionally lost their wallet. 🤷‍♀️

IMO the convenience of plastic far outweighs the risk.

Understand the risks and learn how to manage them.

So far, Marie hasn’t lost anything other than a bit of time.

Go ahead, give it a try! 💳
the most unsafe way of paying for anything today is by check and snail mail
