Have you ever taken a Taxi? How was the experience?

Growing up whenever work was slow, my dad worked as a Taxi driver. It's a hard way to earn a living.
As an adult, there were a handful of times (in emergencies) that I needed to call a Taxi myself.
It's shocking to watch that meter tick by. Especially the first few minutes.
Then of course, you are expected to not only pay for your fare, but the driver expects a tip too.
In the end, taking a cab is very expensive.
If it were a cheaper form of transportation, I would have used it for more than emergencies.

How about you? Anyone here ever need to take a Taxi?

In NYC taking a cab was an everyday thing for many people. Of course, their average salary was higher than any of us could ever expect to achieve.

The big thing is time. If you're in a hurry, a cab is so much faster than either a subway or a bus (unless of course you've got grid-lock going on, then you'd probably do better on foot or on a bike).

I used to take cabs home from work, but my work was 30 or so blocks from home and I got out at about 4 AM, so I was too tired (and too cautious) to walk home at that time. Back then (late '70's) the ride would cost something like $5 and a $1-$2 tip, so it was worth it to me.

But now?

Here in PA, the last time I took a cab was over two years ago, and even then - a trip of about 3 miles that took all of 10-15 minutes or so cost $25. Needless to say I'm never in that much of a hurry these days. One of our 3 cab companies went out of business a few months ago, so 1/3 of the competition is gone, and I think the guys in second place aren't long for this world either, so pretty soon there will be a nice little monopoly going on. I can imagine what the prices will be then.

I've taken cabs several times over the years, but only when absolutely necessary...haven't had to call one for decades now. They can be expensive for sure, and if you're in a city like NY, you better know the short cut to your destination, and make sure the driver goes that route. My husband drove a cab when I first met him, and I went along with him some nights. It's a hard job, and you have to keep moving or you make no money, dangerous too, never know who you're picking up, or where you have to take them...never mind the ins and outs of traffic. Tips are expected, as with any service, but not everyone tips.

Only sometimes when I was a little guy. I lived on West Hill, about 2 miles out of town. Usually I rode my bike, but there were times a cab was necessary.
The cab company was Smiths Taxi and they had 2 or3 1953 Plymouths for transportation. The one way trip was 75 cents and I remember Grandma complaining that these prices were way to high. Wow....to high?

You talkin' to me?

We have always use 'cabs' if they are available at airports. We also will use them if available at our hotels...we have never had a problem with any of them. But they are getting to be less and less of them available. I also have not had a problem with what they charge, it seems fair and it is posted where you can see it when you get in the cab. I usually, give the drive a nice tip on top of the fee...

One thing about a cab that I like is they always know how to go where you want to go...or that has been our experience...

The nearest town is 35 miles, so no.
that's really weird, because if I wanted a cab to come 30 miles here from say the airport which is 30 miles away.. .. it would come.. in fact if I wanted one to come 200 miles it would come.. they don't mind as long as they're getting paid....
